Critic Reviews for Saved by the Bell Season 1
All Critics (40) | Top Critics (20) | Fresh (30) | Rotten (10)
If they do tune in, they'll be pleasantly surprised, not only by moments of strong writing, but by some of the performances.
"Saved by the Bell" is a throwback that looks forward, embracing the past while living in the now. And it shows that you can teach the old school some new tricks.
Saved by the Bell's reboot works because it's self-aware and because it mocks the lack of self-awareness of the original, but it also works because it's legitimately funny and good-hearted in a time that's rife with cynicism.
The show can also be almost Dadaist, in the worst way, courtesy of "jokes" that are frequently little more than random pop culture references made for the sake of making them.
A pop-culture landscape oversaturated by adaptations of old IP can start to feel depressing. Enter Zack Morris.
There's a lot going on but Saved By the Bell has somehow hit a sweet spot so that its chemical mix sparkles rather than combusts.
This newest incarnation of Saved by the Bell expertly blends its nostalgia with quick-paced comedy and an update of the original show for a modern teen audience.
It tries to appeal both to viewers of a certain age who remember the original and today's tweens, and it's an uneasy balance. You might want to try to get your kids to watch it with you, but be prepared for them not to get it.
Self-mocking reboot has a diverse and charming cast.
The meta-conceit works at times, giving the show some interesting new dimension, but you can't help but wonder who this reboot is for.
These spoofy gags and Daisy's tendency to break the fourth wall to confer with viewers produce some chuckles, but after a while the gimmick wears thin.
With terrific cast chemistry and whip-smart writing, Saved by the Bell surpasses expectations to deliver a fresh, funny take on the tired teen sitcom with enough self-referential moments to delight even the most diehard fans of the original series.

Nov 28, 2020Loved it! Enough of the nostalgia without spending too much time in the past. Great new cast! Hope it gets more seasonsa
-
Nov 28, 2020As fan of the original, I love how it doesn't take itself too seriously. That was the problem with New Class and College Years. It might be hard for newbies to get into it, but for those of us who graduated with the Bayside kids (in 1993), it's great!

Nov 28, 2020not funny and tone deaf.

Nov 28, 2020To start, I was slightly surprised at how much AC, Zack, Kelly and Jesse had changed in this series. They didn't seem like the characters we enjoyed watching at all. The theme song was trash and they need to change it. I did like Lark Voorhies who plays Lisa Turtle. She was impressive. If possible I need Screech in Season 2. He brings a uniqueness to the show that the new characters can bounce off of. To conclude I will say this.... what made Saved By the Bell great is that it's originality inspired a generation of people. It didn't allow today's society norms to dictate how the shows storytelling needs to be played. And that's what needs to change for season 2. A prime example of a reboot that does this.... Cobra Kai.

Nov 28, 2020I have to say the three first episodes of saved by the bell 2020 were the worst television that i have seen in all quarantine, I'm serious that was trash mom, but... But the rest of the series it's actually good, not amazing but good, I think that the show needed that three first episodes to star deploying the characters ( in my opinion badly) but they redeem then self's in the rest of the series, it's a little bit crige guys i have to be honest, if you surpassed that it gets some much better, i actually like to see a season 2 and where that journey it heading at, i have hope,.

Nov 27, 2020I love this reboot! Love the old shows and it continues here. Can't wait to watch more
-
Nov 27, 2020It was super funny and captured what teenagers are like in the current time period and it was entertaining. I enjoyed seeing some of the old cast too. You can tell it has potential for a second season which I hope it gets and I will be watching it again in the future. I hope anyone reading this will give this lighthearted and fun genuinely funny show a watch.
-
Nov 26, 2020So good in its own way! It's different from the original but I liked the new characters and thought it was really funny! I'm crossing my fingers for a season 2!
-
Nov 26, 2020TIME OUT---this is UNWATCHABLE. The acting is so bad, especially from the new cast. If you thought the original was bad, this is 10 times worse. Sad that I wasted my time on this one.
-
Nov 26, 2020Best reboot of 2020. Genius writing. I couldn't stop laughing. Incredibly executed. Obsessed with the new cast and it made me love every original character even more.
