"Savior Complex" chronicles the controversial story surrounding Renee Bach, a young American missionary who felt called by God to set up a charity for malnourished children in Jinja, Uganda. But years later, shocking allegations arose that Renee was treating the sick children herself, without medical qualifications. Detailing Renee's divisive journey, the series addresses the wider questions around "white saviorism" and the ethics of foreign aid work done in the name of humanitarian and religious ideals.

Director Jackie Jesko has access to all sides of the story -- including Bach -- and paints a damning portrait. Go to Full Review
Judy Berman TIME Magazine 09/28/2023
What Jesko uncovers isn’t the individual malice of a typical true-crime psychopath. It’s something more frightening in its tenacity: the collective, racially charged hubris of well-meaning, white, often evangelical Americans in Africa. Go to Full Review
Chris Vognar Rolling Stone 09/26/2023
The result is a deeply troubling story that you paradoxically don’t want to see end, never boring but never descending to the hyperbole employed by more than one of its subjects. Go to Full Review
Alison Lanier Pajiba 10/09/2023
What the documentary does well, and what makes it worthwhile to watch, in my opinion, is not only showing a portrait of a destructive would-be martyr but in giving a depiction of ineffective activism. Go to Full Review

Elina S 10/29/2023 Renee is someone that thinks she is a savior whose story is complex! So title is very fitting. It's a messy story. Several "heroes" turn out to be villains. Story is well told and gives a balanced perspective. I felt that this showed how mission work inherently drives healthcare disparities. Also ignore one star reviews that focus on "cancel culture" lol, great watch. See more L3TR B 10/13/2023 Savior Complex is a well-made examination of how colonialism, religion, narcissism, and biases lead people to act in self-righteous and harmful ways in the face of reason, stark reality, medical science, and the scientific method. See more Jim D 10/04/2023 What could have been a simple skewering of the lead woman ended up as a very balanced and thoughtful account of charitable work gone awry. Explores the dangers of unchecked impulses on both the missionary and at at times activist side. See more FD C 10/02/2023 Race should have zero impact on this story. But modern tv feels compelled to push, wedge, force and jam race into everything. It just negates the entire actual events. If you want to be preached about anti white, anti American and anti religion for a couple hours this is for you. In 10 years people are going to look back at this period of entertainment and be shocked about all the hit piece programs made See more Maddix I 10/01/2023 Very slow, repetitive and boring. Which is a shame because it's such a valid issue. The brief coverage about the No White Saviors campaign was ten times more interesting than the whole of this documentary. I couldn't bring myself to finish the last episode because it was all so dull and drawn out. (And I'm a major documentary fan.) Ok, we get it, she was another self-appointed missionary imposing "the Lord's work" without any medical qualifications and pimping it for donations. This should have been a segment on 60 Minutes or Vice or maybe an episode of 48 Hours or another investigative magazine shows. It wasn't layered enough to warrant THREE lackluster EPISODES. Sadly, I have to agree with another reviewer about all the seemingly gratuitous and time-filler Unicef-Feed-the-Children-commercials like imagery of vulnerable children. See more Rexie S 09/29/2023 Probably the most openly racist show made in the last 25 years, which amazingly manages to be racist to both white and black people. Its also a hit peace on a missionary, with very little actual proof, designed to make other people not to go help anymore. It has every cliche progressives love: hate against white people, hate against Christians, extremely cringe testimony from very cringe people, and so on. At the end, it doesn't even matter what they talk about, because this documentary isn't about finding any truth, its basically made to normalize hating a group of people who actually help others.
