The kids are seemingly clueless, fairly likable individuals, but should we root for them? For a pilot episode, the show's mere concept was left awfully blank/ambiguous.

It starts out looking like one show, a sexy, light-hearted comedy about larceny, and ends up looking like another: a slightly more serious, and potentially irritatingly sentimental, dramedy about trying to go straight.

Watching how the Wests attempt to navigate the straight and narrow could be hilarious, but there's little indication from the pilot of how future episodes will be structured .

Whatever their ratings fates, both Scoundrels and The Gates register as much more than summer throwaways that weren't good enough to make the regular season cut.

There's nothing really wrong with "Scoundrels," but it's just hard to see what's special about it, either.

Generally, I enjoy Madsen, but she is too shrill in "Scoundrels.'' She's always yelling, except when she breaks down in an unearned crying scene.
