Scream is self-aware - not only of its genre, but of its intended audience.

It often feels pretty, well, MTV, in a cliche sense, with a bevy of attractive, vapid characters acting in a rather stilted manner.

If you just know the plot of the original Scream, just take that and strip it to its most basic, generic parts until you get this.

Right from the first scene there's a unique energy to the piece. It doesn't feel like a knock-off or a cheap tie-in. It's a horror movie in weekly series form.

Luxe environments mixed with bitchy teen entitlement and karmic vengeance drive Scream beyond its slasher-exploitation film genesis to a stylish metaphor about a new generation's excesses and mean-girl cruelty.

MTV's TV adaptation of Scream updates the franchise with new characters and trendy references to Instagram, YouTube and texting, but it leaves out the snark and spirit that made the big-budget slasher film franchise so memorable.

I will not be sticking around, as a matter of taste; but I will not be standing in your way.

MTV is wrong when it says, "You can't do a slasher film as a TV series." What they should have said is, "We can't do it, but someone could."

Whether Scream can overcome Noah's legitimate concerns about adapting a slasher movie for TV remains to be seen. But tonight's premiere gets the show off to a strong creative start.

Once the foul deed happens, though, Scream, perhaps out of necessity, shifts to a more conventional teen-drama mode, introducing an assortment of characters, most of whom, one suspects, should be prepared to get shish-kebabbed before it's all over.

The show is moderately fun and scary, but it largely settles for poking fun at the same clichés that were covered in the movies, giving us a little nostalgia along with the grins and goose bumps.
June 29, 2015
The TV version of Scream has so much fun gutting its origin story for inspiration, it almost forgets to be scary.

The result could easily have been a messy botch, but Scream is a little better than that.
June 29, 2015
If the series is going to continue as a high school drama that every so often is interrupted by a literal stab to the gut, then the stories need to be much more compelling and the performers much less central casting bland.

If you really love Scream, go for it. But if you miss it, it's not going to kill you.
June 29, 2015
The series feels tired from the start, a wan attempt to send chills up our spines for the summer.
June 26, 2015
Even for MTV's young target audience, the characters in Scream are remarkably empty and bland.

In short, what Scream really wants to be is Bates Motel. That's not the worst ambition, but without the presence of a Vera Farmiga-level actor-or a character worthy of such a talent-it may be doomed.
