Second Chance: Season 1 Reviews

January 14, 2016
The Frankenstein riff Second Chance is one of those distinctively Fox-network science-fiction shows that has a brain and an eccentric spirit but mostly keeps it hidden beneath conventional elements.

In the era of Peak TV (to use a handy if largely meaningless phrase), a series needs something more than an attractive, charming lead to stand out from the pack - even if that lead is as attractive and charismatic as Kazinsky.

When it tries to go deep or dark, it feels overwritten and overwrought; as light entertainment, it's passably diverting, not without charm.

Yes, this sounds preposterous. And the crime-of-the-weeks sometimes dabble in clichs... But the actors sell it, and the writers throw in enough winking humor to let us not take it too seriously.

The non-procedural elements are the much more exciting parts of the series, but the cases take up way more time.

It's still surprising the network snapped up the Frankenstein-inspired Second Chance, which strikes the rare balance between being over complicated and stupidly simple.

Second Chance is preposterous, silly, and forgettable. But it never takes itself too seriously and it flows along at a good pace. Take it or leave it.

Kazinsky gives this some spark. Otherwise, it can feel like a '70s cop show brought back from - you guessed it! - the dead.

It so far still deserves the benefit of the doubt, with a compelling opening episode that should leave many viewers in the mood for more.

Second Chance... is watchable without being especially engaging. Maybe it needs yet another chance.

The most annoying thing about Second Chance is the way that Kazinsky barely even tries to mask his English accent in a number of scenes... It's a distracting aspect of a sub-par show.

It's shocking that a show with this much talent involved in 2016 could be this ineffective, this inept and this awful.
