In many ways, it’s the lack of surprises in Secrets of Playboy that are so depressing: the question of how this was not merely allowed but actively lionised for so long sticks in the craw throughout. Go to Full Review

The problem is that by mixing together allegations large and small, frightening and simply strange, public and previously unknown, "Secrets of Playboy" reveals less than the sum of its parts. Go to Full Review

Jack F @MovieFan111 Jan 28 I will admit, Mr. Hefner was extremely sexist in how he viewed and treated women. But if you watch "The Girls Next Door", his image and behavior is magnetic. He was definitely a sleaze. While I do believe that the girls who signed on should have known everything they were getting into, it's still very wrong and repulsive the way they were treated. See more David H @RT60765788 01/04/2023 I watched this documentary and if even half of the allegations in it are true Hefner was one of the most evil and demented men in modern American history. Some of the things that the women describe having seen or experienced in the mansion are so cruel and depraved that they seem beyond belief. One playmate/bunny was so degraded and traumatized that, alone in her apartment, she put a gun to her head and blew her brains out. See more david f @dfulmer 08/30/2022 Tells the story behind the magazine empire with tons of eyewitnesses. The portrait of Playboy that emerges is much different than the one of sexual and intellectual liberation promoted by Hugh Hefner when he was alive. This documentary charts the course of the business through decades as Playboy challenged the strict morals of the 1950s all the way up until the reality TV era, one which was made for and by Playboy. A very interesting documentary overall. See more J. A @JoA1973 08/25/2022 Pure comedy! This series is a catalog of jaded women who enjoyed the fairy tale for a time and it didn't work out. If any of them had stayed with Hefner until his death they would have a completely different view of him and his life. All of them had this different view while they were living the fairy tale. None of them were forced. And now, very few of them can support themselves because they banked on their looks alone and begged for that fairy tale. They traded everything for it. It didn't last forever, and now someone has to pay. See more 06/08/2022 While the documentary sheds light on the sensational aspects of the dark side of the Playboy place in American cultural history, it is almost totally one-sided, giving (as others have commented) a platform for a narrow group of former associates of the enterprise to express regret and - yes - revenge from the point of cultural expectations of 2021. Why there weren't many interviews of both women and men who had profitable and appreciative experiences with the full entity that was Playboy only goes to show this documentary was completely meant to display the shocking and sensational so the "true crime" and reality tv audiences of today could trash the entirety of the Playboy cultural impact. It was revolutionary for its time, it changed how Americans viewed sex from puritanism to a more comfortable social dialog and it was a true touchpoint for 20th century American culture. None of that is what this documentary shows or is about. See more 03/10/2022 Secrets of Playboy is devastating; certainly, one always questioned Mr Hefner's so-called pursuit of sexual liberation (for whom--just men?) but the revelations here are tragic and sad for the women involved. not only Mr Hefner but other male celebs like Bill Cosby and Jim Brown are totally disguisting and repugnant. And, because of power wielded, few were in a position to fight back--at least at that time. Ugly male toxicity. Simply tragic. See more Read all reviews
