Critics Consensus

Though Servant's slithering mystery often wanders into dark, crowded corners, its claustrophobic atmosphere and powerful performances build enough tension to keep viewers hooked.

It's a good premise, surrounded by good ideas, and yet there's no saving something that was never alive to begin with.

Doesn't seem to have the emotional curiosity to earn its premise.

It's eerie and unsettling in ways that television often tries to be but rarely accomplishes.

"Servant" is fascinating to look at and, at first, contemplate. But its slithering, reversing structure elides the fact that it must move the plot forward only infinitesimally each episode in order to conserve it.

Servant is just meant to be savored, like an expertly crafted menu.

Though there's a seed of an interesting idea in Servant, it's weighed down by a checklist of tiresome horror cliches.

Admittedly, as I write this, I can't help but wonder what might happen next. While I've yet to be blown away by an episode of Servant, I nonetheless yearn for episode four.

There are a lot more twists and scares in Servant besides it's titular sitter. Not all of them work as well as others

Its episodes of just 30 minutes helps a lot in its rhythm and development. [Full review in Spanish]

The slow pace of Servant's blooming mystery will feel just right for a certain kind of viewer, especially with the artful execution. But you've got to ask yourself going in if you really want to invest in a question mark.

If anything is going to get people talking about Apple+, Servant is it.

Servant takes its time unspooling its central mystery, and even if the path seems well-traveled, a few surprises are waiting.

Audience Reviews for Servant: Season 1

This is a one hour Twilight Zone episode stretched out over 10 hours. The ending simply can't support the weight of the time investment.
  • Feb 12, 2020
Excellently well done, but a little bit slow in the middle to be honest.
  • Feb 09, 2020
Servant was ponderous. The first few episodes were intriguing enough to keep me watching. However, the last 5 or so episodes were wretched. The show made little sense. Spoiler alert: The basement floor cracks open. Spoiler alert: We have no idea why. The acting in the show was good. Rupert Grint - in particular - was a completely dislikable character but the only character you were rooting for because he was the only sane one in the entire show. It was picked up for season two, I won't be making that mistake again...

Even at a snail's pace, there is never a dull moment in Servant. Episode after episode, you‘d find yourself craving for more. And the season finale is just truly scrumptious, leaving you wanting for seconds.

Media like this is why I am an avid fan of M. night Shyamalan, who helps bring to life a thrilling, watchable tv program for those who can access it or find it worth it; and it's also nice to see Rupert grunt return to a more promising role since his Harry Potter days.

One of the best mystery series for me
  • Feb 02, 2020
Your always craving to see what will happen in the next episode. I loved how the season 1 finale answered so many questions, but also created a whole new problem with so many new questions. Can't wait for season 2!

Shymalan stoops to a new low. With servant he becomes a click-bait content provider. With a story and characters as thin as the paper they are written on servant drags on for 10 episodes when it could have been told in 3. An absolutely terrible use of your time. Go watch the movie they stole the plot from instead.

Do you find the horrific, accidental death of a baby entertaining? 10 episodes? How about 50 episodes... This story could easily have been told in 2 hours. For episode 9, I'll never forgive.

Great balance between curiosity and fear. Great story.
