Servant

Critics Consensus

Though Servant's slithering mystery often wanders into dark, crowded corners, its claustrophobic atmosphere and powerful performances build enough tension to keep viewers hooked.

Critic Reviews for Servant Season 1

It's a good premise, surrounded by good ideas, and yet there's no saving something that was never alive to begin with.

There may be places where the story begins to droop, but, if we are to judge a psychological thriller by its ability to worm its way into our psyche, then "Servant" certainly performs its duties.

Doesn't seem to have the emotional curiosity to earn its premise.

Right now, Servant is delivering the kind of giddy thrills you want from horror: Things are going from bad to worse for the Turner family, and I can't help but enjoy it.

"Servant" is fascinating to look at and, at first, contemplate. But its slithering, reversing structure elides the fact that it must move the plot forward only infinitesimally each episode in order to conserve it.

It's eerie and unsettling in ways that television often tries to be but rarely accomplishes.

If anything is going to get people talking about Apple+, Servant is it.

Nov 20, 2019 | Full Review…

Scary and sublime, M Night Shyamalan's Apple show is about the rich at war with the poor, about superstition clashing with rationality, and about how, when confronted with things we do not quite understand, we react with fear.

By bucking the trend of bloated runtimes and unnecessarily long seasons, Servant proves that it's a great thriller, not in spite of its short runtime; but because of it.

Its episodes of just 30 minutes helps a lot in its rhythm and development. [Full review in Spanish]

There are a lot more twists and scares in Servant besides it's titular sitter. Not all of them work as well as others

Admittedly, as I write this, I can't help but wonder what might happen next. While I've yet to be blown away by an episode of Servant, I nonetheless yearn for episode four.

    Must see! Apple's best show!

This show is amazing. It made us believe stronger and stronger that the appearance of this real baby on episode 1 is, after all, normal and not questionable. Well, it is not, and every 30 minutes episode is uncomfortable for us while it gets very vulnerable for Dorothy. The rhythm is not common for a show. Could seem a bit long sometimes but it kind of retaught me how to enjoy a piece of suspens. Skipping the intro is not the thing to to, it's the warning that you are going to lose any sense of reality for 30 minutes.

Servant is a very sad serious, The series really kept me on the edge of my seat, unfortunately the finale was a bit of a let down. A lot of confusion. I do think this was a great way to introduce appe+. I hope we get a season 2 of the Servant so my questions can be answered !

Awesome show. The photography is on point. A really compelling storyline with such a brilliant attention to details, deep meaning and an amazing cast. Apple is delivering quality content. Every scene on this show is meticulously thought. Loved it.

If you aren't into slow burning thrillers, this show is definitely not for you. With that being said, M. Night takes his sweet time with Servant. By half way through the show, I throughly the premise had been resolved. Nope. Not even close With the season finale at hand, some plot threads are answered while more pop up. BUT, I am totally okay with that. I want this show to take its time. All of the actors do a spectacular job. Soundtrack is on point and I cannot wait to see what season 2 brings. Bravo Tim Apple!

This is a real success! 10 episodes where you regret only that you cannot watch all 10 everyday and everyday and again... Great masterpiece with incredible actors choice, operator and location. Unbelievable!

I just finished watching episode 10. The whole series was destroyed by the huge let down finale. I'm seriously annoyed for letting myself become invested in this show. Whyyy?

The season finale of this show was so frustrating. The pace of each episode is incredibly slow, but you want to keep watching because the buildup promises an awesome payoff. But the finale reveals virtually nothing. After 10 weeks, none of the loose ends are tied up. I had to run a search to double check that there weren't more episodes -- nope, that's actually the end of the season. Wow. Great acting, fantastic score, interesting premise, ruined by an inability to deliver on its promises. Disappointing.
