Denis Leary's Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll feels much like the aging rocker it is trying to portray -- a beloved star struggling to reach his former glory.

Some of the show's targets almost certainly won't be laughing.

I will continue to watch... hoping that Leary and company can continue to build the characters' chemistry into something special. The ensemble seems to be finding the right comic - if not drum-driven - beats.

Leary fans who miss either his stand-up or hit show Rescue Me, should be satisfied, and I can easily see the program working out its writing kinks and getting stronger as the cast gels.

This story is treading again on territory that has been long ago stomped down by every other dark antihero show in cable's years-long parade of damaged men whose self-destructive behavior is revealed in fits and starts to hide a wounded soul.

If Leary had started by trying to build characters rather than stock figures that could embody or experience satirizable things, the show would have more staying power. As is, it seems likely to drop off the charts soon.

Unlike the variously overweight and past-their-prime stars of some male menopause efforts, Leary brings a certain aging appeal to the role.

The rockers of FX's latest may be bad to the bone, but the show itself is just plain bad.

A warm family sitcom Sex&Drugs is not. Neither is it a very funny sitcom.

Jul 14, 2015 | Full Review…

Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll comes off as Leary's Dad band, the TV equivalent of getting together with your classic rock-loving friends, and doing some serious shredding, man. They seem to be having a great time, but that doesn't mean viewers will.

Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll is a lot of fun, but it's very rough around the edges.

Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll even offers original music along the way, making this a show that (as they might have said on American Bandstand) has a beat and you can laugh to it.

Even if you're not yet sold on the characters in Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll, the sterling music history anecdotes alone will have you tuning back in for episode two.

Audience Reviews for Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll: Season 1

From Denis Leary comes the outrageous FX comedy Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll. In Season 1 aging '90s rock star Johnny Rock puts his old band back together when his estranged daughter Gigi seeks him out in order to help launch her music career. Leary is especially good and does a terrific job with the satirical, irreverent style of comedy. And Elizabeth Gillies gives an impressive performance as Gigi, and has great chemistry with Leary. Additionally, the writing can be rather clever in its commentary about the music industry. However, the show gets a little overly crass and vulgar at times, taking full advantage of its TV-MA rating. Yet on the whole Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll is an entertaining and fun sitcom that delivers a promising first season.

SDRR is SO GOOD. Love the drama, the comedy, the music. Great chemistry between the cast members. And Liz Gillies is such an amazing talented singer.

Great show, don't know why it is so underrated, probably because people fail to see the satire in it. Very talented cast, both in acting and in music. Second season was even stronger than the first and leading to a great finale. Would recommend it to everyone!

It feels as out of date and out of touch as the main character.
  • Sep 17, 2015
A bit too cliche to be original, Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll is sarcastic, drug-fueled, and too old-school for it's own good. It both loves and hates the modern music industry, but can't seem to decide which side it truly falls on.

Short and snappy epidoses. Leary's charachter harks back to his sneering heyday, mix in music and nostalgia and its a winner.
