Shades of Blue: Season 1 Reviews

March 22, 2018
... boring isn't even the worst offense Shades Of Blue commits.

Shades of Blue isn't about to pass The Shield as the high-water mark of the American dirty-cop genre.

As it stands, this show is on a familiar path that, if unaltered by some refreshing turns or segues, will end at the same premature dead-end/cancellation like its many forefathers before it.

[J. Lo's] new cop drama is a less fun, less interesting and a far less appealing version of the groundbreaking series The Shield.

With a lone, transient saving grace in Jennifer Lopez's icy cool NYPD detective, Shades of Blue has one reason to watch and about a dozen to skip, not limited to: self-seriousness, predictable plots, and a distasteful contentment with being ordinary.

As the protagonist, Jennifer Lopez is someone we should love and root for but I just couldn't do it and that's why Shades of Blue didn't work for me, guys.

This show might've been gangbusters 15 or 20 years ago, but now it feels like it's walking in the blue-tinted shade of greater police dramas both on cable and off.

Sadly this is far too derivative, clunky and confusing to be either a great show or a ratings powerhouse.

The show itself is only moderately terrible, another failed network attempt to make a gritty cable drama.

Jennifer Lopez is not (and never has been) ordinary: She lights up the screen and almost manages to carry this show over its repetitive plot hurdles. But almost is not enough.

This is a series that tends too often tends to drag rather than pull viewers along.

Blue has the soul of one of those gritty FX anti-hero dramas... But the more we get to know Harlee... it all begins to play like a Lifetime movie that doesn't know when to end.

These cops are not even particularly good at corruption.

As the serialized plot thickens and the characters become inconsistent, the show's flaws become unavoidable and its excesses absurd.

While the premiere, directed by Barry Levinson, is more promising that the ads may have made it look, the show quickly devolves into a series of silly twists and nonsensical plotting in subsequent episodes.
January 5, 2016
Competent but uninspired, and often more concerned with flattering its glamorous star than telling the best possible version of this story.

It inspires too much eyerolling to be taken seriously.
