Oscar-nominated actor William H. Macy stars as Frank Gallagher, a single father of six who spends much of his free time drinking at bars. The Gallagher children -- led by oldest daughter Fiona (Emmy Rossum), who takes on much of the child-rearing responsibility due to her mother's absence -- manage to raise themselves in spite of Frank's lack of parenting and unusual parenting style when he does choose to act like a father. The drama is an adaptation of the BAFTA Award-winning British show of the same name.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Shameless enters its ninth season on a tight budget of fresh stories left to tell, but still finds some rich new notes of characterization -- all while gracefully bidding adieu to Emmy Rossum.

That's a lot of pressure for a season of television, and based on the premiere I'm not sure the current trajectory of Shameless is going to be able to withstand it. I'd love to be proven wrong. Go to Full Review

Shameless's ninth round ended in soulful fashion, sending Emmy Rossum off on a high note. Go to Full Review

Even though it probably could have been better seeded throughout the season rather than rushed through in these last two episodes, the show does make Fiona's goodbye work. Go to Full Review

Each character seems to go two steps forward and two steps back. Some might accuse this of being repetitive, but if you accept the series' nihilistic nature, it is just the show's perception of reality. Go to Full Review

Nine seasons in, Shameless feels tired. Go to Full Review

Clearly, the makeup crew has worked overtime to achieve Rossum's "rock bottom" look, and she's relishing a character arc that should allow her to leave the show in dramatic fashion. Go to Full Review

Natty M @Nnmarti1 6 days ago Shameless could have been a great show, but da writers’ treatment of Fiona ruined much of it 4 me. My problem isn’t dat Fiona is flawed every character is. It’s da constant lack of meaningful accountability. Fiona makes terrible decisions, hurts people, manipulates situations, acts entitled and hypocritical,& then da writers repeatedly rescue, validate, or reward her. By Season 9, da formula became predictable: Fiona screws up, suffers temporarily,& by the end there’s a payoff dat lets her regain control or feel righteous again. The lemonade storyline was a perfect example. She accused a neighbor of racism without establishing dat was her motive, rallied the entire neighborhood, trespassed, punched her, got arrested & people still rallied around Fiona b4 Debbie bailed her out. Fiona could have remained flawed & still been forced to own her behavior. Instead, da writers constantly cushion her consequences. Accountability would have made her a much better character & the show far better. See more Scott M @RT28057915 Jul 14, 2026 Almost unwatchable. You can tell the writing team is completely different. Absurd premises that make it impossible to get lost in the story. Not to mention the multiple sanctimonious speeches in every episode. See more Hc N @RT04263181 Jul 6, 2026 The downward spiral of Fiona and the Hobo Loco competition both add depth to this season, and even it’s a shame to see Fiona go, I think they do it in a nice way as both Lip and Debbie have grown up to take over her caretaker role. Humour and seriousness are mixed well in this cocktail to supply for entertainment with afterthoughts. See more letaiser @RT88401244 Feb 11, 2024 I really liked this Season , after Season 6 I would say this season was the best , so much happened and it was very fun to watch it all , Fiona getting deeper and deeper as character because of alcohol , then we got lip getting a child (not yet but his girlfriend is pregnant) , then Liam grows more of a character and Ian is in Prison , My favorite characters were Karl and his gf and Debbie , because it was very fun to watch every scene with them , it was enjoyable and Kev an V are amazing characters as well ,I enjoyed very scene with them too , overall was this whole season just perfect and I had very much fun with this season , the cgi is still not great but they had good effects or more likely more better scenes ,the jokes were some of the bests in the whole Show and it was nice to Fiona growing more of a character again ,also this season had the most episodes which was very nice.
