Shameless: Season 9 (2018 - 2019)

Season 9

Critics Consensus

Shameless enters its ninth season on a tight budget of fresh stories left to tell, but still finds some rich new notes of characterization -- all while gracefully bidding adieu to Emmy Rossum.

Critic Reviews for Shameless Season 9

Even though it probably could have been better seeded throughout the season rather than rushed through in these last two episodes, the show does make Fiona's goodbye work.

Each character seems to go two steps forward and two steps back. Some might accuse this of being repetitive, but if you accept the series' nihilistic nature, it is just the show's perception of reality.

Nine seasons in, Shameless feels tired.

Jan 30, 2019 | Full Review…

Clearly, the makeup crew has worked overtime to achieve Rossum's "rock bottom" look, and she's relishing a character arc that should allow her to leave the show in dramatic fashion.

It's not easy to keep things fresh after so long on the air, but Shameless Season 9 Episode 1 was filled with the signature humor, drama, and acting that we've come to expect from this Showtime hit.

Sep 17, 2018 | Rating: 3.5/5 | Full Review…

Shameless has developed a specific rhythm. The humor is still strong and the twists hilarious, but in a recognizable style pleasing for the fans. Still, if this is your first glimpse of the Gallagher family, it won't be anything less than rowdy.

Sep 13, 2018 | Full Review…

Once you can resign yourself to the fact that the situation is never going to get appreciably better for the Gallaghers, it becomes much easier to sit back, relax, and enjoy their exploits.

Sep 12, 2018 | Full Review…

"Are You There, Shim? It's Me, Ian," maintains the series' signature comedic style and high-level family dysfunction while also providing a stark contrast to the show's first season.

Shameless is back, and it's back with a vengeance -- and that's not necessarily a good thing.

Sep 11, 2018 | Rating: 2.5/5 | Full Review…

That's a lot of pressure for a season of television, and based on the premiere I'm not sure the current trajectory of Shameless is going to be able to withstand it. I'd love to be proven wrong.

    Love this one! So AMERICAN!!!

This season started off with some semblance of promise, and as a die-hard fan, I agree that previous seasons have had some high and low points. I knew Ian and Fiona would be leaving, and although I thought the ending for Ian was a sweet one (Gallovich), Fiona's left so much to be desired. I understand that there may have been time constraints, but this finale was seriously disappointing. Also, this season officially solidified my utter contempt for Debbie. I haven't been a fan of Debbie's since she was a child, but trying to take Carl's girlfriend and take over Fiona's job as being the head of the household (while also asking Fiona to pay back money in) was the last straw. And why in eff is Fiona giving Debbie $50K?!? Why does she deserve that money? And since when is Debbie a lesbian? Previous seasons showed her trying to fake being a lesbian nanny, and she did that QUITE unsuccessfully. Honestly, I don't see how this show can go on with Fiona and Ian both gone, Kev and V on their own storyline, and annoying Debbie trying to act like everyone's boss. Boooooooo.

End of an era. Farewell Emmy.
  • Mar 10, 2019
It was a boring finale, and was emotional which for me wasn't very exciting. The writing was good, but the screenplay was dry it needed more spice.
  • Mar 10, 2019
Truly awful send off for Fiona. Worse than awful, actually. Writers and producers totally butchered the whole series in 1 to 2 seasons. It went to shit after Monica died, the whole vibe and energy went out the window. Those FEW moments of good they threw in was not enough and seemed desperate. The LEAST they could have done was bring Jimmy Steve back. Everyone and fans were straight up telling you what they wanted. You couldâ??ve ended on a good note but writers didnâ??t listen. What incompetent fools. It's like they don't even know what they created at all. Do they not remember? Your ratings will now plummet even worse.
