Critics Consensus

Shameless enters its ninth season on a tight budget of fresh stories left to tell, but still finds some rich new notes of characterization -- all while gracefully bidding adieu to Emmy Rossum.

Critic Reviews for Shameless Season 9

All Critics (10) | Top Critics (1)

Even though it probably could have been better seeded throughout the season rather than rushed through in these last two episodes, the show does make Fiona's goodbye work.

Mar 11, 2019 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

Each character seems to go two steps forward and two steps back. Some might accuse this of being repetitive, but if you accept the series' nihilistic nature, it is just the show's perception of reality.

Nine seasons in, Shameless feels tired.

Jan 30, 2019 | Full Review…

Clearly, the makeup crew has worked overtime to achieve Rossum's "rock bottom" look, and she's relishing a character arc that should allow her to leave the show in dramatic fashion.

Jan 22, 2019 | Full Review…

It's not easy to keep things fresh after so long on the air, but Shameless Season 9 Episode 1 was filled with the signature humor, drama, and acting that we've come to expect from this Showtime hit.

Sep 17, 2018 | Rating: 3.5/5 | Full Review…

Shameless has developed a specific rhythm. The humor is still strong and the twists hilarious, but in a recognizable style pleasing for the fans. Still, if this is your first glimpse of the Gallagher family, it won't be anything less than rowdy.

Sep 13, 2018 | Full Review…

Once you can resign yourself to the fact that the situation is never going to get appreciably better for the Gallaghers, it becomes much easier to sit back, relax, and enjoy their exploits.

Sep 12, 2018 | Full Review…

"Are You There, Shim? It's Me, Ian," maintains the series' signature comedic style and high-level family dysfunction while also providing a stark contrast to the show's first season.

Shameless is back, and it's back with a vengeance -- and that's not necessarily a good thing.

Sep 11, 2018 | Rating: 2.5/5 | Full Review…

That's a lot of pressure for a season of television, and based on the premiere I'm not sure the current trajectory of Shameless is going to be able to withstand it. I'd love to be proven wrong.

I never want this show to end. I feel it's a show that properly conveys the nuances in lives that many are never exposed to. I love the raw portrayal of emotions and issues in this complex family.

This season was by far the most emotional season to me. I really felt like Fiona character spoke to me in so many ways. i felt the pain in all of the characters. I hope that Shameless will have more season(S) to come. Fiona played a big part so if shes gone in season 10, i hope that she is back in future seasons ( if any ) this show has turned into my number 1 fav. so funny and hard to stop watching.

The show has lost my interest and desire to watch due to the overwhelmingly political character plots.

Used to enjoy the stories and characters. Cant help but feeling each character makes more and more idiotic life choices making it hard to stay invested.

Really do we have to bring politics in this !! California has sunk into a new low.

People saying this show is s**t or it's dried up need to realise that the casy members are growing up. And with growing up comes with their own points of view. Season 9 was amazing. The characters grew and are still growing. Id hate to say this but a nine year old Carl won't work in 2019. What is truly drying up is the so called fans of this show. You're just bored and want to slam this show into the ground.

Still a basically sharp and compelling viewing experience, but less so since it's hampered in season 9 by the constant barrage of politically correct commentary that belongs on the evening news rather than here where it comes across as preachy and out-of-place.

Every character's story line has been replaced with political propaganda. I get that a lot of shows do that, but -- in the case of Shameless -- it's taken over the entertainment of the show. Debbie? Gender gap. Ford? Anti-capitalism. Ian? LGBTQ. Kev? Rape culture & consent. Kev & V? Illegal immigration / Hispanic caravans. Frank? White supremacy. We get it. But can we just be entertained when we tune in?

It has jump the shark It so boring it puts me to sleep

This once great dark dramedy has now been turned in to a run of the mill, set to music, HD, bright lighted, free extra, comedy. The real Shameless ended season 6 And was truly an inspiring, unseen before fantastic series. I can see why Fiona heads for the hills at the end of this one. Do is a favor and do one 2 hour, back to original finale and let us put the Gallagher's to rest the right way. Not remembering this great series with horrid season 9. Please!!!
