Sherlock: Season 3 Reviews

April 10, 2019
The Empty Hearse, which witnessed the return of Sherlock Holmes to the world of the living, was an exercise in fan service, but that's not entirely a bad thing.

Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss have created something of unusual brilliance ... The best hour and a half of television so far this year.

The Empty Hearse, with its heady revelations and the promise of future mayhem via a new nemesis for Sherlock and John, manages to create an aura of mystery and potential that is quite intoxicating.

Sherlock is still all about Sherlock, and it knows we're here to watch Cumberbatch do his quick-thinking, semi-sociopathic scene chewing.

The series is a comment on Holmes as much as it is an adventure in which he stars. Knowingness is one of the things it wants to share with you.

As is often the case with Sherlock, the best bits are less about plot and more about people.

Sherlock's third season ultimately makes the series' world richer, and a stronger foundation for more stories to come.

Sherlock, set in contemporary London, ingeniously converts 19th-century technology to today's world of smartphones, blogs, surveillance cameras and GPS, without adopting the attendant self-absorption and psychobabble.

Soon enough, I am reminded of how quickly the show's nifty momentum becomes a distracting blur of euro-chic gimmickry. Sherlock moves swiftly and intelligently but also a little too coldly, like a long commercial for better WiFi.

Thank goodness for flashbacks, because we also finally get to see Mr. Cumberbatch kiss a woman in a way that will leave no doubt about Sherlock's talent as a lover.

Thanks to the stars, the wit of the writing and a few clever tricks, the show remains a joy.

Sherlock's certainly among the most interesting people one could know, the cleverest, and maybe the smartest.
January 17, 2014
The third season is looser, funnier, more emotional and also significantly less logical than what has come before.

Happily, though it's not the series' strongest script, the two fine actors can still extract every nuance from it.

The show deserves to do well because it's so bloody good - smart, whimsical and occasionally laugh-out-loud funny, finding fresh, distinctive avenues into this venerable character, even with multiple incarnations currently in circulation.

You do not have to be a Holmes expert to go completely gaga over the new season. All you need is appreciation of perfection.

The most humorous episode to date, Sunday's premiere can be occasionally confusing, but it's consistently entertaining.

There may be hashtags, blogs and motorbikes, but the spirit remains in keeping. I think Sir Arthur would approve, enjoy it too. Hard not to really.

Benedict Cumberbatch is alive and well and in fine form.

A paltry number of things on television are as exciting as a new season of Sherlock - and if you haven't seen the first two tragically short seasons, then do everything in your power to right that wrong this minute.
