Sherman's Showcase: Season 1 Reviews

August 21, 2019
"Sherman's Showcase" is fearlessly ridiculous in its presumption of the audience's familiarity with these shows and others.

I laughed out loud at that one - and the show had just started.

Sherman's Showcase has flickers of politics-of seeing getting down and making jokes as its own form of resistance-but they shimmer subtly, like sequins on a halter top. In multiple senses, the show never gets old.

From hilarious original songs and celebrity appearances (series producer John Legend narrates episode one, which also features a quick cameo by Tiffany Haddish), all keeping the funny intact. Do NOT sleep on the best variety series of the summer.

The format is a bit of a hodgepodge, yet pretty consistently funny.

Even when the satire in "Sherman's Showcase" goes big and broad, the acting and the musical performances are so good, I found myself wishing there really WAS such a show.

Sherman's Showcase is above all - and most importantly - just plain funny.

... when the show really digs in, it can generate big laughs.

In the early going, I'm most taken with Sherman's Showcase's willingness to try damn near anything.

The more Showcase's reality ensnares you, the more depth the show takes on. It wants to make you laugh - and frequently does - but even more than that, it wants to sell the bit.

The show generally jumps around without lingering too long on any given subject. That can make it a little disorienting to follow, but the brisk rhythm also keeps both the IFC and fictional versions of Sherman's Showcase from getting stale too soon.

Sherman's Showcase isn't perfect, but it's crazy and fearless, which is perhaps better. Even if you're not a fan of the bombastic variety shows that are the subject of mockery here, this still might win you over due to its creative spin on the genre.

It's a glittering heap of invention that moves according to its own internal logic.

More modest, but with plenty of sideways charm, is "Sherman's Showcase," from "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon" writers Diallo Riddle and Bashir Salahuddin.
July 31, 2019
Uneven but merrily offbeat gem of sketch comedy.
July 31, 2019
Though Showcase is more allusive and ambitious than South Side, both shows are funny.

"Sherman's Showcase" will make you think. And, unlike a lot of contemporary comedies, it will definitely make you laugh.

The series offers a lot to laugh, and occasionally marvel, at.

Everything on the show is a fondly satirical lie, and most of the skits will make a grownup smile.

"Sherman's Showcase," meanwhile, is a pure jolt of stylized nostalgia, from its affectionate sendups of soul, R&B and hip-hop to its candy-colored sets with their abstract cutouts, traversed by roller-skating dancers.
