Thank the Lord for the scenery, which always gives a five-star performance. Go to Full Review

Shetland can maintain its knack of rising above the familiar without its former leading man. It doesn’t need one. Go to Full Review

So beautifully written and complex, raising the level of crime series to psychological art. Multiple layered subplots coalesced by great writing, direction, the brutal landscape is ominous, the pacing electrifying. Jensen's dramatic turn is solid. Go to Full Review

We can feel screenwriter Paul Logue working hard to find ways to knit the new characters into a Shetland-esque backdrop... You can’t help feeling that while this is Shetland, it isn’t Shetland. Go to Full Review

There are the makings of a good team. A sonsy, wind-battered Scott & Bailey. A Cagney & Lacey at the edge of the world. Go to Full Review

Jim W @TVViews Mar 2 More twists than a bag of pretzels and more holes than a dozen doughnuts. A little exhausting but still enjoyed the show. Love Tosh. Sandy is great and Ruth kind of grew on me. Great production and amazing scenery. See more Lara M 11/07/2024 This program has really improved since Ashley Jensen joined it. It used to be quite painfully dull and plodding. The new DI Calder and Tosh partnership has really given it a new lease of life Probably due to DI Perez being such a boring and dull character, maybe the writer got fed up trying to make him interesting? Whatever the reason. It's a great improvement. See more E 10/23/2024 Was a refreshing new season. Great to see two female characters portrayed positively with a supportive relationship (not trying to undermine each other). Jensen brings a multi dimensional performance. All the cast were fantastic- some great performances. The scenery also a star! See more Jacob M 07/24/2024 I have never seen Shetland before, but heard good things. I thought I would start with the latest season and then see if I dug it. I did! Very creative cinematography and the acting was top notch, especially Jensen and the other lead. I did notice a slavish art direction that leaned heavily on replicating the island's natural colors (blue, green) in nearly every shot, right down to cloaking every actor and painting every wall in its 'look book' of a few pantones. It was an attractive look, but distracting. It will be interesting to watch the other seasons now... See more Bill B 05/16/2024 Enjoyed the first 7 seasons with Perez (who I kept seeing Alan Alda, looking at), though I started getting weary of his angst. Glad to keep seeing the islands and so far am enjoying the casting changes. Don't know why female leads are dissed in other reviews here, as certainly Vera carried her show wonderfully. See more Marianna K 03/06/2024 This season seems to have got bad reviews for no real reason. Ashley Jensen is great in everything she does and it retains the original atmosphee of the previous 7 seasons. The storyline was a little muddled, it started off one way then veered off somewhere completely different and quite dark... a little too dark perhaps and could have done without that. I hope it comes back for a season 9. See more Read all reviews
