What to Know

Critics Consensus

Shifting Gears has a formidable pair of sitcom stars in Tim Allen and Kat Dennings, but flavorless characters and flat jokes keep their new comedic vehicle stuck in neutral.

Tim Allen can be funny, but he needs better material than this. There’s also an eye-rolling tendency to make him the hero. Go to Full Review

Allen and Dennings do quickly strike a satisfying mix of antagonism and affection. Go to Full Review

“Shifting Gears” works because Allen and Dennings are believable as an estranged father-daughter pair trying to work it out. Go to Full Review

Shifting Gears is too witless to get mad about, but it’s striking how much effort and talent it wastes trying to counter-balance a 21st-century Tim Allen character. Go to Full Review

Created by Mike Scully and Julie Thacker Scully, “Shifting Gears” plays into the hands of audiences who loved its two stars. Neither goes too far afield from the personalities they helped create. Go to Full Review

I've found that the show can sometimes feel cheesy and a bit pedestrian — but I've also found that the series has given me some serious laughs, mostly thanks to Dennings, that is. Go to Full Review

Jeff J @JeffJeffJeffJeffJeffJeff 1 day ago Couldn't even get through the first two episodes. Kat Dennings' voice is still horrible to listen to. Tim Allen leaves a bad taste after seeing him spiral out of control in Last Man Standing and basically playing the same persona in Shifting Gears. Was good to see Seann again, but the guy is capable of doing so much more than just handing jokes two a Allen that is way over his prime and Dennings' that never was funny to begin with. See more Jennifer T @RT96891749 Sep 4, 2026 Good tv show really loved it can’t wait for season 3 See more Stephen D @RT37880768 Aug 9, 2026 At the end of the day, I watch TV shows built around personalities I like and don't mind spending a lot of time with and, for reasons I can't entirely explain, Tim Allen still falls into that category for me. Blame it on me being a 90s kid I guess. Can't really make the case this is a clever show, or even a particularly good one, but still a pleasant enough way to kill half an hour. Don't follow the critics. They may not be happy in their job!! See more Lorrie M @CLMac May 11, 2026 I really like Tim Allen and all of the previous series, but I agree, it isn't quite working. The chemistry and believabilty of the cast falls woefully short of past series. Matt and Rachel's relationship just doesn't work. Maybe it is the writing but I really feel that this show just isn't up to the task. See more Read all reviews
