Shogun had “prestige” written all over it. Yet the care taken by creators Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo to deliver this story without having it reek of appropriation and voyeurism was evident throughout. Go to Full Review

Shōgun hasn’t been perfect. When it was slow, it was practically stationary. But the moving finale more than paid off all the time and patience demanded of its audience. Go to Full Review

One of the main features of this show—and the source of its most important narrative innovation—is how rigorously rule-bound its characters are. Go to Full Review

It was the characters, and subsequently, the acting, in Shōgun that captivated me. The dynamics between the nobility and the samurai, the men and the women, and the spanner in the works that is Blackthorne, kept me coming back for more. Go to Full Review

Ursula G @RT47582300 5d A masterpiece! Gripping from the first episode to the last. Hiro Sanada, SIR! You deserve all the accolades and recognition for your role. See more Igor S @Igor_Sena Mar 30 This is a nice tv show to watch. It might be a bit slow and even repetitive for some people, but it's still worth a watch. The last episode/moments alone are worth it all. See more MBI M @MNZGamerX Mar 24 An absorbing historical fictional drama with strong and compelling characters but I am not sure why the British navigator/pilot has to be such a repulsive lumbering jackass devoid of any refinement or diplomatic skill ... The show can be slow at times and expends much effort in showing in detail Japanese social etiquette of the period and while interesting often distracts from the actual narrative concerning the power struggle between the 5 regents and the rivalry between the Portuguese and British. The balance of power seems to shift with the arrival of a mysterious ship and the capture of English pilot John Blackthorne by one of the regents (Yoshii Toranaga) and soon becomes a disruptive and distractive instrument to be used in the ruthless power struggle between the regents in Japan ... The cinematography, costume design and historical detail are all impeccable and fascinating but it is the storyline that is absorbing and the last three episodes reveals the true mindset of Toranaga See more Gabriel B @GabBru Feb 22 Fascinating cinematography, amazingly detailed costume design, and a real insight into feudal Japan, but unfortunately, given the good source material, the plot was not well implemented or meaningfully tied together. Certain plot points were emphasised and drawn out without necessarily building on or driving the plot forward in a meaningful way. Things just felt addressed but not wrapped up well. I appreciated some of the refocusing away from Blackthorn to more of the japanese characters, as well as leaning into the reflective, thought processes and traditional ritual elements, but I was expecting a lot more from it, and the source material provided it. See more Maverick C @MaverickCinema Feb 15 Very intriguing story and well acted throughout. Pacing can be off at points, but it did not ruin my enjoyment at all of the series. Cosmo Jarvis is a powerhouse and Anna Sawai will break your heart. See more Tom E. @BigRed118 Jan 31 A beautiful and heartbreaking story. Frustrating at times, but powerful in the end. It took its time which made it hard to say goodbye to the characters. Very well done. See more Read all reviews
