"Shut Up And Dribble" is an impressive demonstration of the great value in principled athletes of color speaking their mind and the lessons available to white America if it chooses to listen.

It pulses with an agility that celebrates basketball and its heroes in a way that infects casual fans or even - gasp - non-sports viewers.

That is, admittedly, a lot of ground to cover, and even at nearly three hours "Shut Up and Dribble" invariably has a somewhat arbitrary feel to it. Still, the big inflection points paint a cohesive picture.

Shut Up and Dribble is a good exploration of all the ways that black athletes couldn't remain apart from racism or politics even if they wanted to - which, as it happens, many of them don't.

After watching this documentary, the next time you hear someone imply that LeBron or Steph Curry should just shut up and dribble, you'll know the right response: Shut up and consider your basketball history.

Somewhat light on analysis, don't go into Shut Up and Dribble expecting to find out what is particularly special about basketball or why it appears to foment unrest.
