Critic Reviews for Slasher Season 1

All Critics (5) | Top Critics (2)

Slasher has everything; steamy sex scenes, horrifying murder sequences, and a final girl to root for. The series really reads as an homage to the 90s slasher films that preceded it, and is better for it.

Whether or not it will flavor a solid story or merely overstuff it is yet to be seen. All I know is, they earned enough goodwill to come back for more.

Chiller's first stab at original programming is satisfyingly brutal and bloody - even if its reliance on horror tropes executed better elsewhere keeps it from ever reaching truly terrifying heights.

Mar 3, 2016 | Rating: 5/10 | Full Review…

Some old-fashioned horror is coming. And yes, it's here, and bloody good. Very bloody, though. Sex is at the bottom of it, you will be pleased to know.

Whether viewers will be intrigued enough to see this mystery to its end will depend on their willingness to wade through a lot of superficial soapiness.

Audience Reviews for Slasher: Season 1

The acting is poor. The storyline is weak. The characters development is shallow. And if you are going to use the Bible as a basis to the story be accurate or have the decency to acknowledge the scriptural text are fictious.

Very underrated show by horror fans!

This season showcases a motely of cinema sins, ironicly. The characters are paper thin and they aimlessly stumble through the plot with minimal character motivation. This is all topped with dangerously cheesy kill scenes hitting all the horror cliches we have grown to despise. This season is boring and slow, and I often found myself checking how many episodes I had left to view. This season can be summed up with two words: lazy writing. Move on and watch season 2 & 3, they are significantly better (although season 2 still has shaky writing).

I just finished the last episode of season 3 and I am thoroughly disappointed. Each of the seasons feel "rushed," as if there should have been episodes to explain more, rather than just piling everything into the ones they have. The explanations behind why x killed y, etc. weren't that great either. They were very bizarre and not very believable. Sure, it was interesting to watch, but at some points I had to walk away and question why I was still watching it. Kudos to them however, as season 3 was a lot better than season 1. Season 1 was so cringy at times it killed a piece of me.

A mid-season episode of Criminal Minds stretched to last eight episodes: that is how I would describe the first season of Slasher. The foremost problem this series had was the pacing. Poorly placed and executed exposition makes it plot feel stunted at times and rushed during others. Events feel contrived and disjointed, while plotholes abound. Character motivation is extremely lacking, causing jarring inconsistencies that make little sense. Mysteries come out of nowhere, popping into the story only during the ten minutes that they are relevant to advance any semblance of overarching plot. Then "poof" they are gone never to be mentioned again. In short, the stunted and uneven nature of the plot lends itself to distinct lack of flow. Another thing I want to point out is that while watching this I very rarely got the impression I was watching a horror themed series. As I stated earlier, it feels like a crime drama more than anything else. It's hard to know what exactly Slasher is trying to be. Imagine Scream without the terror and suspense and decent characterization and Bob's your uncle: you've got whatever the first season of Slasher on your hands!

What it may lose with its two-dimensional characters it wins back with its creative kills and motives from a killer we are, unfortunately, rooting for.

(SPOILERS)First I got pretty interested about the story and as a gore fan the gorey scenes didn't mind me at all. Liked them a lot. BUT big problem for me is the story. I first thought the show would avoid cliches that horror has. Nope. Still same old stuff. You hear murderer's phone ringing somewhere in the house and you go looking for it. So so stupid! All characters aren't that smart. Murderer chaises you in the middle of the town and you only yell for help when you are on the most quiet part of town. Main character also gets away with a lot of stuff. Like wtf is the ending?? They get no punishment for killing the murderer? Sure he deserved it but that's not how stuff works in real life. Also one big major minus for the show is that it's very obvious who The Executioner is. I guessed it on the 3th episode being like "Come on... if this guy turns out to be him... you made it too easy for us". Other minus is that things conveniently just happens. You find old pic of the real killer as kid holding exact pic the murderer used. Suddenly just found it. This is just one example and cant remember the rest bc i didn't write them down.

I really liked this show and have now seen up to the third season fully through, first time writing a review for a TV show. This season was a great start to this series and I love how they continue to switch the plot each season. I need to re-watch this for more insight to making this review more detailed but I do remember liking this quite a bit, but Season 3 has my heart over the first two so far. We will see hopefully even better in the future, I still can't give even season 3 over a 4 star, so there is potential to make this show better still in my opinion. It's not an A grade show in my opinion, more like a B+. Still, I love the genre of anything Horror/Thriller, and gore doesn't bother me too much but this show has gotten extreme!
