Comedically, it's somewhere between Fleabag and Divorce, being both surprisingly explicit and emotionally tender, while remaining true to the humanity of its women on the verge.

Still, it's difficult not to be entirely charmed by Smilf, which, if it can settle its temperament just slightly, feels like a new kind of story, one that should be told, and in Frankie Shaw, it marks the arrival of an important and original voice.

All of her character's random quirks are odd yet charming, and her very real inner struggle paired with her penchant for making bad decisions drives the story along and makes for some rather unforgettable hilarity and an overall fantastic show.

The first few episodes are a bit wobbly, but Shaw's Bridgette is likable even when doing unlikable things and SMILF has the benefits of two supporting players playing significantly, and successfully, against type.
