What to Know

Critics Consensus

Smoke obscures its appeal with coy plotting until it eventually lights a fire under its story, but commanding turns from Taron Egerton and Jurnee Smollett keep this drama watchable throughout.

If the early episodes are a little lacking in momentum, the highly visual direction by Skogland in collaboration with her director of photography Sam McCurdy is wonderfully immersive and often frightening, never allowing you to not stay involved. Go to Full Review

Smoke is really a volatile character drama fronting as an anodyne procedural. Go to Full Review

Unfortunately there’s a certain unsatisfying irony about a show that sends up pompous prose while presenting us with clunky lines itself. Go to Full Review

The story that encompasses our characters is inherently interesting. Where there’s Smoke, there’s fire, and this show will burn right through your binge watching plans. Go to Full Review

At nine episodes “Smoke” feels a bit padded. But the high points compensate in the end. Go to Full Review

Ebony L @rosyold 2d I am loving Smoke, but also finding it hard to watch. It’s pretty gutting at times. See more Will M @Mass9126 Jul 14 Show’s alright aside from the absurd feminist black cop power fantasy See more Travis M @TMorg007 Jul 10 Forgettable. Lequizamo scenes in particular makes this a sludge to sit through. See more PitPunkOneTime T. @FukLeo Jun 21 It’s just really bad writing. I think Dennis Lahan should stick the books. There’s not one likable character in this entire show. See more K B @CinematicFilm May 31 The cast and acting, visuals are great but the story about investing arson itself falls apart halfway through. Spoiler alert, don't read this if you haven't watched it: What could have been a proper try to pin down the arsonist story with investigation, finding proof and then documenting everything to nail the evidence bullet proof gets muddied up with the side stories that try to add an element of action and surprise. It started slow and well but then goes into dumb territory as it gets closer to the end. Which is a shame as it could have made a more interesting story than where it ended up. I think if it was more procedural like a swedish crime show, that would have leveled up the ending a lot more. See more Maggie H @maggiemac May 6 I enjoyed the show in a lot of ways. The actors are great, the director is clearly talented. The story is interesting. The characters are likeable - but that’s mostly due to the hard work of the actors. The writing leaves a lot to be desired in the interactions between the characters and the sorely underdeveloped relationships. Characters go from appearing to have genuine chemistry and enjoying each others’s company, and then the next moments it’s as though we’ve missed a scene because they’re suddenly taking about each other as though they’re enemies and it should be obvious to the audience. Did these missing scenes end up on the cutting room floor or did the writers just schizophrenically jump from one emotion to another, too busy getting caught up in pseudo-emotionally-raw cleverness? Hard to say, but makes it difficult to watch at times. See more Read all reviews
