Based on the evidence of the first six episodes, it's an adaptation that badly misapprehends the point of its source material; it doesn't even have the decency to be an interesting failure.

This new TV series is a pale imitation of Bong Joon-ho's brilliant dystopian thriller.

Its concept is solid, its performances are admirable, but neither of those can hide the fact that Snowpiercer takes too long to get good, and by the time anything interesting happens, the ride is already over.

You'd have thought the last place you'd want to set an ambitious and sprawling epic was a train carriage that resembles a claustrophobic toilet pipe.

Though set inside a superfast train condemned to circle the globe on a never-ending loop, Snowpiercer is a show that changes direction and speed with whiplash-inducing frequency.

At least in this first episode, the leading actors lack the strength of the attributed roles. [Full review in Spanish]

An original idea becomes vulgar and cliche. Snowpiercer turns into something like CSI: Trans-Siberian. [Full Review in Spanish]

The desperate cry of "Guys! I'm the last Australian!" is probably not meant to be funny.

But although Snowpiercer couldn't be more timely, somehow TBS's new show... doesn't even get out of the station before it goes off the rails.
May 19, 2020
As a TV show, Snowpiercer has to be about more things and show the audience more of the world in order to build a longer, serial story. Unfortunately, that longer story is a drag.

It's disappointing to see a premise that inspired an exciting film encumbered by so much unnecessary freight, and the best efforts of its cast decelerated by weak noir and freezer-burnt gloom.
May 18, 2020
Overall, we'd rate the show a slightly frustrating diversion, helped tremendously by its two leads, but it can't get past the fatal flaw of television's inherent difficulty in dealing with allegory or metaphor.

Snowpiercer is a deep freeze all round.
May 17, 2020
The show is burdened with extending a simple, goofy idea to ten-plus hours of television, and it can't quite fill the time well enough to justify it.
May 16, 2020
The show suffers from soapy silliness, stilted situations, and a lack of narrative momentum, preventing this train from ever getting out of the station.
May 16, 2020
The television adaptation of Bong Joon-ho's dystopian 2013 film managed to make it to air after a tumultuous five-year production process. But it is just a shadow of the work that inspired it.

Snowpiercer is not an entirely bad show. It's not great, either. Really what it does is start out meh, then become more compelling from the midway point onward, which averages out to a final assessment of halfway decent.
May 15, 2020
The movie used the train as a surreal, horrific allegory; the TV show wants it to feel real, and it never does.

It just keeps pushing forward, completely unwilling to give you people to care about in this vision of the future, hoping that you'll just go along for the ride.
