Critic Reviews for Sons of Anarchy Season 1

All Critics (24) | Top Critics (18)

Sons of Anarchy features some of the most interesting female characters and relationships between women of the anti-hero television age.

Sep 3, 2008 | Full Review…

The biker drama gives you Jimmy Smits in a jaw-dropping, change-of-pace role.

Sep 3, 2008 | Full Review…

A complex and well-built drama that leaves the viewer wondering if there's enough humanity here to make the hard-boiled stories worth following.

Sep 3, 2008 | Full Review…

There are enough compelling pieces here, and the setting is novel enough - this is a different type of organized crime than what you usually see on TV - that Sons could eventually be a worthy heir to The Shield.

Sep 3, 2008 | Full Review…

I think it has real potential to become a solid dramatic addition to the FX slate.

Sep 3, 2008 | Full Review…

Sons of Anarchy uses its pilot to map out a strong story line, one that will likely remain consistent through the show's finale.

Jan 14, 2019 | Full Review…

Sons Of Anarchy is part of a recent trend to darker, harder TV drama that requires more than just gripping storylines. It definitely has that, but it also requires a cast able to portray each character realistically. We've definitely got that here!

Jan 14, 2019 | Rating: 5/5 | Full Review…

A powerful drama dealing with many unpleasant topics - from gun running to vigilante justice. I haven't seen anything quite like it on television in years.

Sep 13, 2014 | Rating: 3.5/5 | Full Review…

This isn't good enough to recommend without reservation - but if you need to get your manliness on - this might be just the thing.

Sep 3, 2008 | Rating: 7.2/10 | Full Review…

Holy emotional ball - errr, body? - of fire, that was intense.

Sep 3, 2008 | Rating: 4.5/5 | Full Review…

Gritty and occasionally violent, as The Shield prepares to bow out, Sons should capably fill the smart, testosterone-fueled void.

Sep 3, 2008 | Full Review…

Unfailingly coarse yet brashly effective.

Audience Reviews for Sons of Anarchy: Season 1

My absolute FAVORITE SHOW OF ALL TIME!!! I have seen this entire 7-season show more times than most would admit. Was drawn in when I heard Hunnam was hand-selected by Sam Taylor-Johnson to play Christian Grey. I had seen him in Abandon years before and wanted to catch another performance even though I was certain a show about an outlaw biker gang would not interest me. I turned on the Pilot episode and barely came up for air binge-watching the first FOUR seasons free on Netflix. After a few seconds of thinking I would not pay for Season Five I was processing my credit card. Then, I had to WAIT for the Sixth Season to air the following Fall! I told all my friends about the show and when they wanted to watch I had them over for binge sessions so we could watch together. That was a repeat occurrence many times! Why the obsession???? Everything! The story, the writing, the acting, the directing, AND the MUSIC!!!!! Seriously, this show has it all -- and there's an underlying dark humor that enables you to get through some of the gruesome stuff. Hunnam's performance is mesmerizing and brilliant -- and Katey Sagal is amazing! The rest of the cast - including guest stars are so good! Kurt Sutter is a genius and his ability to draw you into caring about people who do some really bad stuff is a matter of great writing and character development. This first season will lure you in with the Pilot episode and it just keeps getting better from there! This is a must watch and each time I saw it again I picked up new nuances. You know a show is great when you never get tired of watching it!

binge watched to season 6 so far. Feels like the writer took a hit of speed then finished the script off on his way to the studios. Derivative tripe........but ya know....lockdown.

Best tv show since Breaking Bad. All the cast were spot on in their roles and the emotions this show takes you through never lets up. Jax Teller is a man who is so conflicted, so dangerous but also so loyal and loving. You can't but help falling in love with him or to hope that things work out for him. But he encounters obstacles at every corner. The ensemble cast works perfectly together and although it is a violent show it's brutally realistic. Absolutely amazing to the point of being perfect.

    Loved it, a must watch

Really good introduction to a series

The show is pretty good overall. Jax wearing "nursing shoes" throughout is a little disconcerting, though I sympathize with the actor having hip replacement surgery (the reason he walks the way he does, swaying back and forth). The storyline of Abel getting kidnapped is a little bit drawn out in Season 3, but otherwise it is a strong show. 84% of all the dialogue from all seasons: Jesus. Jesus! Jesus Christ! Jesus Christ. Sh*t. I get it. Sweetheart. I know baby.
