Critic Reviews for Sons of Anarchy Season 5

All Critics (22) | Top Critics (4)

Kurt Sutter's epic tale of an outlaw California motorcycle club launches its fifth season Tuesday with the same visceral intensity that stamped season four.

Sep 11, 2012 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

It's an amazing turnaround for Jax, one that was hard to see coming.

Jan 15, 2019 | Full Review…

It's been a fascinating, gradual decline of this character [Jax], who lost the moral high ground a long time ago.

Jan 15, 2019 | Rating: 4.5/5 | Full Review…

Season 5 of Sutter's "adrenalized soap opera" promises more secrets, lies, grit and blood. This was a compelling kick-off to the season, and it showed that 'SOA' can still stir up emotion and excitement even after four plus years on the air.

And on a whole, the fifth season did better at dealing with all of its plot than did the fourth.

Jan 15, 2019 | Rating: B+ | Full Review…

It's around the fifth season where some dramas begin to show their age, for better or worse. Sons of Anarchy is no exception there, but fortunately, this series is aging well.

Jan 15, 2019 | Full Review…

Still, Sons of Anarchy seems to be reclaiming, slightly, some of the elements that made its first and second seasons so brilliant: emotional drama paired with humor, and a side of violence.

Jan 15, 2019 | Rating: B | Full Review…

It's great to have Sons of Anarchy back on TV, and with a fairly strong start to the season I am hoping for a series as good as we have come to expect.

Jan 15, 2019 | Full Review…

Despite the cyclical nature of the series, season 5 was largely successful because it didn't press at an outcome it was unwilling to deliver.

Jan 15, 2019 | Full Review…

Hopefully Jimmy Smits' Nero and Donal Logue's Lee Toric will have more of a presence next year, as for now we found both season 5 and "J'ai Obtenu Cette" a bit light in weight.

Audience Reviews for Sons of Anarchy: Season 5

Sons is becoming very predictable on it's approach and Season 5 was underwelming as hell compared to the great Season 4. It's more of the same, with the exact same twists and turns. Get read for Tig to do something really stupid and cause chaos, a new bad guy already mentioned before shows up, Jax will try to do some good but will end up making bad choices, Clay is still an asshole, main character will die violently, blah blah blah. More of the same and not in a good way. Still mixes good chaos, action set pieces and some interesting character development here and there.

    This season was wild

The show is pretty good overall. Jax wearing "nursing shoes" throughout is a little disconcerting, though I sympathize with the actor having hip replacement surgery (the reason he walks the way he does, swaying back and forth). The storyline of Abel getting kidnapped is a little bit drawn out in Season 3, but otherwise it is a strong show. 84% of all the dialogue from all seasons: Jesus. Jesus! Jesus Christ! Jesus Christ. Sh*t. I get it. Sweetheart. I know baby.

Brutal right from the get-go in Season 5 of 'SOA.' Opie's farewell serves as one of the best series moments and furthers an already complicated story of SAMCRO. While predictable in some areas, the unpredictability tends to make up for it to keep the story full throttle and the viewers fully in-tune.

"What a tangled web we weave"...
  • Nov 16, 2015
I love the increasing role of Otto (show creator Kurt Sutter) in season five, and we're given some major events (Opie's death, Tig's daughter burned alive, Clay's exile and arrest), but this season doesn't stand up to the previous two. It was still very exciting, but with no strong villain (I'm sorry, but Pope wasn't as badass and untouchable as they wanted viewers to think), and Jax always thinking he's the smartest man in the world, I got to lower the rating a bit. Jax always thinking he's doing the best-for-the-club grew tiresome a bit. Still a fantastic show, can't wait to see the final two seasons.

This season is where the WTF factor begins and never really stops until the complete end.
  • Dec 02, 2014
You cannot name a better crime drama as far as nuance, character development, grit and engrossing spectacle.

Só agora, passados 5 anos, se começam a notar ligeiras correcções das deficiências que já vinham das outras temporadas... Contudo, se a história é cada vez mais parada para quê arrastá-la durante 13 episódios?! 75-79% :D 20/03/2014

Another consistent season for the show, that also shows that this is one of those tv series where no character is safe from the hand of death.
