Critics Consensus

Well-performed, but frustratingly fleeting, Soulmates asks some interesting questions, but its anthology approach cuts any novel revelations short.

Critic Reviews for Soulmates Season 1

All Critics (12) | Top Critics (7)

So many of the characters in "Soulmates" are looking for trust. That search would mean more if the show around them had a little bit more of it.

It's hard not to walk away feeling as if you've spent hours watching the writers attempt to free themselves from their pitch.

Perfection devoid of intimacy is still a flat page. It takes much more than the compatibility of parts, however scientific, to make a match.

Soulmates is largely a collection of chemistry-less performances and outdated tropes, some of which are so egregious that they overshadow any attempt at memorable storytelling.

Soulmates is an especially savvy concept, and among the best anthology series to come along in a while amid a flurry of mostly mediocre ones.

The show is also good at coming up with characters who, probably much like the modern consumer, will blindly accept what Soul Connex is selling.

Oct 5, 2020 | Full Review…

The chapters that work best, by a mile, are the ones that remain as firmly grounded in reality as a futuristic series can.

Oct 2, 2020 | Full Review…

The show's title is on the nose but perfectly accurate. Episodes range from original to formulaic, but it never lets go of its most entertaining question: How do we know we're with the right person?

Oct 7, 2020 | Full Review…

What's great about Soulmates is that focus on the practical. It's a new way to explore an old subject regarding romantic relationships and how we search for partners.

Oct 5, 2020 | Rating: 9.1/10 | Full Review…

Soulmates gives its characters the space to ask fascinating questions about romance without settling on a single message or "right" way to find love. None of the episodes feel preachy.

Certainly the best thing on AMC in a while.

The notion that a scientific breakthrough can unequivocally locate your soulmate is mined in all sorts of provocative ways in this six-episode anthology series... One entry in particular serves up a delicious twist on the technology's possibilities.

Audience Reviews for Soulmates: Season 1

The first episode made me want to throw up.
  • Nov 16, 2020
    Lost interest after 3 episodes.

I thought this show was interesting and entertaining with an original idea of tv romance's tried concept. I like liked the unexpected twists, and all the acting was top-notch. Yes, it's piggybacking on Black Mirror, but this is done well enough to stand on its own not to be simply a copy.
  • Nov 10, 2020
Almost flawless. Every episode raises endless interesting questions on a different perspective of the "certainty" of love presented by the premise. I love the stand-alone episodes because they make you think instead of tying up a long season in a neat little bow.

Singurul episod bun e primul, daca faceau din el un serial era ceva

Definitely loved the eerie and suspenseful elements of Black Mirror. The futuristic touch added character to the show. I do feel like in some episodes that the story was a bit "too much" and many redundant character arcs were not needed to keep the flow of the show going. I felt like some parts of the storylines were distracting and diverged away from the main focus which was someone finding their soulmate. Some bad acting here and there. But overall, the show gives really interesting stories. The aesthetics, special effects, and cinema techniques were really great. 7/10.

I love it, actually. It's not momentously deep but it's an interesting musing on the old adage "be careful what you wish for..." It sounds ideal to find your soulmate, but is it in actuality...? Each episode explores a scenario where two or more people are scientifically linked up with their soulmate (of which there is only one). It's not stupid, the characters are varied, the writing is good. Again: I like it very much.
  • Oct 20, 2020
It tries to have that futuristic Black Mirror vibe with different episodes and characters each week but it's not as exciting as Black Mirror because, well it all revolves around a love app. If every episode is going to be the same thing, just slightly different situations involving people who have taken the "test" then this show doesn't have much promise.
  • Oct 18, 2020
I really like this show only thing I wish they did better was introduce the characters give a background on them.
  • Oct 12, 2020
Another tale of over-privileged pretty people who seem to have everything, but are convinced they're missing out. There are a few interesting actors, but I've grown weary of selfish, immature characters; and era-specific lingo such as "living your best life." This is for the GOOP.com crowd who are looking for magical remedies that they can drink, smear on, or burn as a candle.
