Space Force: Season 1 (2020)

Season 1
Space Force

Critics Consensus

An all-star cast and blockbuster-worthy special effects aren't enough to keep Space Force's uneven blend of earnestness and satire from spinning quickly out of comedic orbit.

Critic Reviews for Space Force Season 1

All Critics (92) | Top Critics (25)

So strange and ill-conceived and ill-timed that not even Carell's avuncular bonhomie can save it. For all its cinematic trappings, Space Force is a series with a single joke running through it, and that joke is American idiocy.

"Space Force," we do not have lift off.

Space Force is not exactly embarrassing -- everyone involved is too talented -- but it is shockingly unfunny for a show made by people who are so talented.

But there is a lack of vision in the show they devised, as it veers awkwardly between farce and drama, spoof and romcom. It qualifies as the year's biggest TV disappointment so far.

The massive irony is that this [Space Force] doesn't seem like it has some grandiose plan either. But it's telling of its team's charisma that despite many things going wrong, Space Force is still a success.

"Space Force" isn't toothless. But it could use more bite.

May 27, 2020 | Full Review…

What might have seemed like an edgy political satire when it was developed in 2019 now suffers from the fact that truth has become stranger than fiction. ... As the show's tagline reads, "Nowhere to go but up."

Pointing the finger at Donald Trump's own ludicrous delusions with quick smart comedy, Carell and Daniels prove once again their humorous talents are a galactic force to be reckoned with.

Jul 8, 2020 | Rating: 8/10 | Full Review…

Space Force is a massive misfire as the comedy flails from joke to joke, not knowing how to land. The Netflix show doesn't seem to know what it wants to be.

Jun 26, 2020 | Rating: C- | Full Review…

Space Force needs an identity other than "satire", because it is impossible to satirize America right now.

Jun 22, 2020 | Full Review…

Carell and Malkovich shine. Even if the show feels arrogant and some jokes don't work, some situations feel freshly funny. [Full review in Spanish].

Jun 17, 2020 | Rating: 2.5/4 | Full Review…

While it attempts to be timely and relevant, throwing jabs at a questionable leader and his mission of returning to the moon, Space Force leans on cheap humor and shallow narrative constructions.

If you expect this to be the office this is not, but if you go into it with lowered expectations you will be pleasantly surprised by a good comedy

Almost didn't see it for the critics. I'm glad that I saw it, the character development is steady and the jokes are smart.

Space Force is nothing to write home about. The first episode is definitely the strongest and funniest, but the series gets weaker from there on out. The show does have a couple of truly funny lines that pop up from time to time, unfortunately, most of the rest of the show is not funny at all. Many of the jokes of this show consist of stale Trump jokes, occasional awkward situations, and people loudly yelling obscenities. Due to character interactions and the main storyline of the season, Space Force often feels more like a drama than a comedy. Another flaw of this show is its lack of scientific accuracy. Why does it take place in Colorado? Wasn't the whole point of the Challenger Incident that cold weather and rockets do not mix? That is why the current rocket launchpads are in Florida, Texas, and California. At another point in the show, they talk about a star being a gas giant, which is a type of planet, something a rocket scientist should know. Overall, it's not the best show, but it isn't the absolute worst either. Although humor mostly doesn't land, and they do not pay enough attention to detail, especially scientific detail, Space Force is reasonably watchable, although it is fairly forgettable.

Space Force's plot is so meandering and meaningless it's hard to watch. The awkward romantic relationships are forced and pointless. The only saving grace and the recipient of my 1.5-star rating is John Malkovich's performance.

Don't start watching until there is a season 2 unless you like being left with a ridiculously contorted cliffhanger. Maybe just watch the first 9 episodes. The show has potential, but the stupidity of the last episode just ruined it. I guess I'm supposed to eagerly wait a couple years to find out how they get out of this mess. I wish someone had warned me.

I have watched this through twice and both times it was a marathon setting. I love it so funny and the best characters.

If you go in expecting it to be like "The Office" you'll be disappointed. If you go in expecting it to pander to your political and social beliefs, you will be disappointed. If you go in expecting nothing more than a laugh (like I did), I believe you will be pleasantly surprised. In Netflix's space force, you will find both smart and dumb humor, a heartwarming plot with believable characters, and a killer soundtrack to boot. The show's greatest weakness (according to critics) is it's greatest strength, and that is through humor, it explores ideas such as what it means to be an American and what qualities make a good leader. Ideas that are relevant to America now more than ever. There is something in Netflix's Space Force for everyone, so suit up spaceman!

This really SHOULD be a lot better then it really is given the talent involved.

Refreshingly funny and witty. Great light fare.

Very entertaining show with solid acting. Rich characters and humor is spread on at multiple levels. I can't stomach Office style humor, but this is different enough for me to be happily entertained.
