Splitting Up Together: Season 1 (2018)

Critic Consensus: Splitting Up Together tries to make light of divorce, but its commitment to genre tropes keeps it from being very fun or funny, despite the always charming Jenna Fischer's best efforts.

Tv Season Info

Lena (Jenna Fischer) and Martin (Oliver Hudson) are a couple going through a divorce. Their financial situation, however, prevents them from completely splitting their household. So, they come up with a supposedly amicable solution -- for one week, one takes on the parent role, while the other lives a responsibility-free life as a single. At the end of the week, they switch roles. With this arrangement, though, they learn to become better parents and better partners, and they reignite their attraction for each other. But they realize the complicated status of their relationship confuses their kids, their friends, and their new significant others.

ABC has far more family-driven sitcoms than any of its rivals. Splitting Up Together shows that the network is still finding new ways to make them work just fine.

Oh, the romantic comedy series. Such a vexing format. When did this work? Does it ever?

...the attractive leads... argue with irritating regularity. They fell out of love, and the sitcom feels like a long, forced push to get them back together.

This is what happens when you try to adapt something remotely edgy for a network (ABC in the US) and timeslot that requires not only bleeping out the F-word put pixelating the swearee's mouth when they say it.

Of course, each show needs to find its niche, but there are some shows that will make you want more and Splitting Up Together isn't one of these shows yet as it still hasn't found its footing.

Consider it conscious uncoupling for the somewhat financially strapped set.

Splitting Up Together allows itself to grow beyond the limited confines of the genre: It's not just about a couple, but two people trying to find themselves and at the same time raising their family in an unconventional way.

Best of all is [Jenna] Fischer, who was the normal soul of The Office and has a satisfying way of commanding attention without asking for it, of seeming not to act, which is of course ... acting.

It's a fantasy version of divorce. I tried, but I just can't commit to it.

As Fischer ably proves, she's been long overdue her own spotlight, so she's gonna make the most of what she gets.

Audience Reviews for Splitting Up Together: Season 1

Cute show! Hopefully ABC doesn't cancel it so flippantly and they give it a chance to gain its footing.

This is an experience. I really love the show and the though in it.

Quirky fun. I actually don't think it would be quite as good without Oliver Hudson and Jenna Fisher.

I love this show so far and can't wait for the next season. I love the story of making light of people divorcing. The writing and story's bare hilarious. The cast are hilarious and stupendous especially Oliver Hudson and Jenna Fischer.

I fell in love in that show before i watch first episode :) I Love Jenna Fischer, I love that humor :)

Love it. It shows both sides and is an invigorating breath of fresh air

Love the cast. It's quirky and cute. Not your typical sitcom and not one of those completely weird shows that make you question why you're watching it.

My new favorite show.

This show is a lot funnier then the other so called comedies, and the main characters are likable.

Cute, funny and well written. A lighthearted comedy based on a situation that’s a new commonality. I’m looking forward to season 2!
