Victor Godeanu, the right-hand man and closest adviser to Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu during the Cold War, is also a secret agent for the KGB and must escape Romania and Ceaușescu before his cover is blown. With only one shot at staying alive, he uses a diplomatic trip to Germany as a springboard to the United States. Helped by an undercover Stasi agent and former flame, and an up-and-coming CIA agent, Godeanu must elude the KGB and his own country's spooks, fully aware that his defection is putting his family back home in mortal danger.

Lee C Apr 17 I could say a lot of negative things about this, such as the fact that it was made on a very low budget, is in no way true to the story that inspired it, and is unrealistic in a variety of ways. But why say that when I can say this, instead: It's fun! Don't worry about its flaws and just enjoy the tension-filled and action-packed story. Splendid reconstruction of the '70 atmosphere, architecture, interior decorations, costumes and make-up, cars, etc.. A strong cast building quite convincing characters. Ana Ularu makes you dread what's going to happen every time she appears. Somebody said that the Romanian language dialogues sound stilted; probably that reviewer did not hear party apparatchiks talking at the time, not to mention people in militarized structures. Unable to say what you think directly, and having to reformulate every sentence using a pre-established vocabulary and standard expressions does not make for fluent talk for anybody, including the regular civilians of the period.
