Critics Consensus

Despite Queen Latifah's strong performance, Lee Daniels' Star is weighed down by sloppy melodrama and overly cartoonish stereotypes.

Tv Season Info

The first season of the musical drama follows the lives of three young singers trying to navigate the music business and become famous. Star (Jude Demorest) is an 18-year-old orphan who spent her childhood in foster care; Simone (Brittany O'Grady) is Star's 16-year-old sister who still lives in foster care in an abusive home; Alex (Ryan Destiny) is a 19-year-old trying to get away from her father's shadow. The three friends form a group called Big Trouble and try to launch their careers, while dealing with personal issues, difficult families, addictions, negative influences, money problems and the ruthlessness of showbiz. Rounding out the cast are Carlotta (Queen Latifah), the owner of a beauty salon who ends up mothering the girls, her transgender daughter Cotton (Amiyah Scott), and Jahil (Benjamin Bratt), a talent manager who really believes in the trio's chances at success.

Critic Reviews for Star Season 1

All Critics (37) | Top Critics (23)

If Star does anything well, it's in how good it makes Empire look by comparison.

Dec 13, 2016 | Full Review…

The performances aren't enough to overcome the problems with the show.

Dec 12, 2016 | Full Review…

Star keeps it trashy and flashy.

Dec 9, 2016 | Full Review…

None of the three is much of an actress, and their weak performances can't give the show the weight or momentum it needs. Awkward dialogue and cliched plots are additional problems.

Dec 14, 2016 | Rating: 2/4 | Full Review…

Demorest is convincing in the role, but she's not crowd-pleasing. She may be pre-ordained by the show to thrive, but she has the reckless and raw vibe of someone else, a survivor.

Just as Taraji P. Henson is the best reason to watch Empire, Queen Latifah is the true star of Star.

Dec 12, 2016 | Full Review…

This show stretches beyond stupid and aims for imbecile territory.

Dec 14, 2016 | Rating: D | Full Review…

A gritty musical melodrama that does not for one second feel real -- but is, at least, rather entertaining.

Dec 8, 2016 | Full Review…

Empire creator has another buzzy musical drama.

Dec 14, 2016 | Rating: 3/5 | Full Review…

There is some promise here -- especially evident in the performance of Demorest. She's the star who might wind up shining brightest.

Dec 14, 2016 | Rating: 2.5/4 | Full Review…

The dialogue is overwrought, and frequently tells us the very things we're seeing onscreen. The trio of aspiring stars are plucky, but they're not very interesting, and neither is the music they sing.

Daniels works overtime to make his latest drama hit all the right notes.

Audience Reviews for Star: Season 1

The First episode was real emotional episode for me. The scene where the guy comes out of the pool changed my sexuality. The slow motion effect in the scene was a good touch. Also when the dad "Raped" the girl. I don't think she got raped. They were sleeping together.

“Star” inicia com demasiada força, mas acaba por entreter mais do que o esperado. As músicas têm um arranjo R&B perfeito e as cenas musicais são bem trabalhadas, mesmo que o foco principal seja a história.

My favourite show, every song is amazing and you can’t help but be involved in all their drama! Love every character!
  • May 12, 2018
I love the show. The plot is great, but it definitely could be better written. It can be a little messy and rushed at times. But I love the drama. Haven't missed a single episode of Star and I love the music from both seasons. Definitely hoping for a season 3 ??

The character Star is way too trashy, network nasty, slutty and hood. Lee Daniels is more than capable of toning down this character and able to keep its edge.
  • Mar 22, 2017
AWESOME SHOW, ITS FOCUSING ON REAL LIFE STRUGGLES, I THINK IT HAS A LOT OF POTENTIAL AND THE CHARACTERS OVER TIME WITH GREAT STORY LINES WILL BE EVEN BETTER.
  • Mar 16, 2017
I love this show. It's raw, real and interesting every week. Sure, there's some melodrama but nothing more than what you see on TV all the time. This show feels authentic to me and the actors/actresses are amazing!

Empire has been a huge success for Lee Daniels. Star is a disappointment. As Star's storyline focuses on a pop group rises to stardom. The storyline is very erratic with the out of place music montages that does not make any sense. Compared to Empire's music producers this show and storyline could be much bigger and exciting. I do applaud Lee Daniels bravery to deal with several serious social issues in the show. The lead character is to appease and bring a more diverse audience with a white lead character. I applaud Lee for trying to bring another all black cast to Fox network. However, this show plays into the stereotypes that everyone is from the inner city and struggling. The music industry rags to riches story for a pop group is not realistic at all. The writers should focus on one of the breakout stars of the show, the rich African-American from New York, Alexandra (Ryan Destiny). Sorry...I am not feeling this show

Good show its very raw which what i think 80% of the folks that give negative reviews will never understand, i understand the struggle and what it takes to survive and the shows it, the queen killin her role! Tyrese always has me laughing when he comes on screen pastor?? the girls are good enough actresses to make the show super enjoyable

Outside of Queen Latifah's performance this is a discount empire
