Critics Consensus

Budget cuts leave the stars of Star Trek stranded among shoddy set pieces and clunky writing -- though even at its worst fans may still enjoy its campy delights.

Critic Reviews for Star Trek Season 3

And perhaps Star Trek's most enduring achievement was to change the way we think about TV. Before Kirk went into space, shows were loved but disposable.

It's just an unlikely space opera, overlong, clunkily put together and not the slightest bit amusing.

The point that I may be beating into the ground is that if you are willing to accept that the story is more important than the props, then you may find something to appreciate in the original "Star Trek."

Without recourse to expensive effects or sets, episodes like The Empath are essentially theatrical, and some scenes are surprisingly intense.

The actors seem tired, bored in most scenes. Even [William] Shatner, which is saying something.

And most significant of all, he wrote complex, multilayered morality tales: stories set in the 23rd century, but with striking parallels for those in the 20th. His achievements can hardly be overstated.

Talk about going out on a sour note.

The most convincing argument one can give in favour of Season 3 is that even a bad season of Star Trek is worth watching.

The less said about the reduced-budget third season the better.

Oct 30, 2017 | Full Review…

Season one changed the genre as we know it, and the second season equally so; it's just a crying shame that the third couldn't have made it a hat trick.

Audience Reviews for Star Trek: Season 3

Oh, I remember this was cringe worthy. How they ended the last half of season two with such great shows only to follow them up with this awful last season. Still, they had some good shows in it. The whole feel of the show changed this season and we all felt it. It was common discussion at the time. The worst one was The Way to Eden. This last year they tried to cater to the hippies and lost it all to be cancelled that year. Luckily, the hard core Trekkies kept it going in syndication.

Freak of the week with some good episodes mixed in.

The third season, despite being good, is a lot worse than the others, I found a little bit unnecessary.

Thank god they finally canned this travesty of a Star Trek show to make way for bigger and better things.

7/10 With the third season and a limited budget, Star Trek takes a turn for the... weird. Season 3 is extremely hit-and-miss (i.e. hits like “The Tholian Web” and misses like “Spock’s Brain”). But thanks to its still lovable characters and campy charm, Star Trek: Season 3 still pulls through.

i like all of the seasons.

After the first two seasons of Star Trek: The Original Series, the show was set to be cancelled by its network. However, after receiving a flood of letters from devoted fans that wanted to keep the show on the air, the network renewed it for one more season. As much as I hate to say it, those fans weren't rewarded with material nearly up to the par of those first two seasons. Since the show was not the culutural phenomena that it has now become, the network buried it in a late-night time slot and forced creator Gene Roddenberry to operate on a shoe-string budget. As a result, the special effects or sets that are needed in a show which regularly shows viewers spectacular events are severely hampered in this season. One episode takes place in an empty Enterprise, one is set in a pitch-black room much of the time, and another takes place in a deserted old West town (as no money existed to pay extras). It seemed like even the quality of the writing went downhill as well. The characters seem a little "off" at times, and the plots aren't quite as inventive as they were previously. Everything was just out of whack. Really, the only highlight from this Third Season is the episode "All Our Yesterdays", which is classic Trek. Other than that, though, there were just a whole lot of episodes that were subpar or average-at-best. So, while I consider "Star Trek" to be one of the classic shows of all-time, I really don't have too many good things to say about this final season. It's sad, considering that the show had so much potential and was essentially abandoned by its network. Die-hard fans can still watch this season knowing that their time with the iconic characters is running short, but compared to the first two seasons the overall quality is significantly diminished.

I remember watching the first episode of Star Trek when it originally aired in 1966 as a young 6 year old. It quickly became one of my "must watch" shows.

This is the one that started it all and is also my favorite of the 6, soon to be 7 TV series. Not only is the cast and it's chemistry the best of all of the series, but there is just something so wondrous and mysterious about the show. A ship full of explorers, not knowing quite where they're headed and what they will find. And they find such amazing and wondrous things. The show, as well as all other Trek to follow challenges the human race to be BETTER and that's a VERY good thing. This is Sci-Fi at it's very best! #Terkkieforlife
