News & Interviews for Star Trek: Discovery: Season 1
This show has boldly tried re-inventing and updating Trek, and, after the first episode, it works.
As the medium of television evolves, it's comforting to know that Star Trek is there to evolve right along with it.
While Discovery is fundamentally quite different from much of the Trek that's come before, its engagement with the franchise, and willingness to both celebrate and examine its core values, keep it true to that spirit.
The actor playing this mysterious Gabriel Lorca -- Jason Isaacs -- also happens to be a major talent who instantly lifts Martin-Green's game. These two appear to be a winning, multidimensional combo.
The real problem with Discovery is not its tone or visuals, but that it still needs to earn its place among the rest of the franchise. Everything we've seen so far feels more like a prequel to the real series.
But despite all that plot, what the show couldn't achieve was a satisfactory conclusion, be it for its full-season arc or with the cliff-hanger in the finale.
It leads to reflection, has well-defined characters, exciting battles and some moment of genuine wonder with the infinity of space. Pure 'Star Trek'. [Full Review in Spanish]
It has been a good start, in which we had the chance to know great characters and I felt myself on board the ship. [Full Review in Spanish]
The effects are suitably impressive, the characters and premise are compelling, and a clear effort has gone into producing something new and different that still upholds the spirit of hope and optimism the entire franchise embodies.
It was a risk to set a new Star Trek show several years before the events of the Original Series, but, as it turns out, it was a risk worth taking.
Audience Reviews for Star Trek: Discovery: Season 1
Jun 04, 2021Wow. I was surprised that I would enjoy the first season of Discovery. Plot twists, character development, and SFX kept my interest throughout the season. I look forward to the next season.
May 15, 2021Star Trek: Discovery is primarily about fast-paced action and one big mystery plot for each season rather than episodical mystery, exploration, ethical or social issues. The episodes are not very memorable, unlike other Star Trek series. Discovery is a gritty, non-optimistic version of Star Trek with prequel continuity issues, e.g., the Klingon makeover is just unnecessary, holograms, or the "instant everywhere" spore drive. However, some issues will be reverted in the second season. If you start to think about the plots for a minute, you will often find many issues that do not add up. Some episodes are so packed with "stuff" and contradictions that I didn't even care to follow the plot in a logical sense anymore. The voice-over pathos inspired by the JJ Abraham movies is just another empty element. And most of the characters are shady (especially in the first season) and unlikable. Some characters become charicatures. Michael Burnham, for example, is supposed to be the hero of the series, but since she's not the captain of the Discovery, she's not in a position to make the big decisions, yet she has all the answers and rebels without consequence (because she's always right in the end). As for the production, the series is well done. There are annoyingly overused light glares in the first two seasons, but the costumes, masks, and visuals are very good at movie level. All in all, I wish they had invested the budget in better scripts, stories, and dialogues written by actual science fiction authors. I recommend watching the earlier Star Trek series, The Expanse, or The Orville instead.
May 05, 2021a fantastic new and re-energized vision of early star trek. Loved it.
Apr 29, 2021STd is the most awful thing I've ever seen. Bad characters, plot holes, terrible dialogue and absolutely nothing resembling REAL star trek. Kurtzman and co. Should be managing a Denny's in Mississippi not ruining yet another franchise
Apr 21, 2021Starts of slow and annoying. The main character, Burnham (the black chick), is a really horrid example of a Mary Sue. The mirror universe stuff is kinda cool, but the dumb "spore drive" is crap even for Star Trek's sad excuse for science.
Apr 14, 2021Absolutely sloppy, generic and mindless. Couldn't be more detached from the thoughtful and intriguing Star Trek episodes we all know and love even if it tried.
Apr 09, 2021This not star trek. It is just star trek branded.
Apr 04, 2021Boring. Would be a crewmember of a ship whose captain killed his entire crew? Nope.
Mar 27, 2021This seasons started out promising but quickly succumbed to the Kurtzman curse.
Mar 18, 2021Great series and an interesting take on the Star Trek franchise. Unfortunate that many old school Trek fans insist on criticising a great addition to the screen.
