Critic Reviews for Star Trek: Discovery Season 1

For now, the new Star Trek feels less like a reboot than an attempt to turn sci-fi's most cerebral property into a glum Star Wars clone.

As the medium of television evolves, it's comforting to know that Star Trek is there to evolve right along with it.

While Discovery is fundamentally quite different from much of the Trek that's come before, its engagement with the franchise, and willingness to both celebrate and examine its core values, keep it true to that spirit.

The actor playing this mysterious Gabriel Lorca -- Jason Isaacs -- also happens to be a major talent who instantly lifts Martin-Green's game. These two appear to be a winning, multidimensional combo.

In short, [Discovery] announces a series of high ambition, fit for purpose for the golden age of TV.

It's got enough good stuff to keep me watching. Nonetheless, it feels a bit too obsessed with Star Trek for its own sake, rather than as a vehicle for telling stories with broader resonance.

This messy iteration is not what Trekkies deserve.

The effects are suitably impressive, the characters and premise are compelling, and a clear effort has gone into producing something new and different that still upholds the spirit of hope and optimism the entire franchise embodies.

It was a risk to set a new Star Trek show several years before the events of the Original Series, but, as it turns out, it was a risk worth taking.

Audience Reviews for Star Trek: Discovery: Season 1

I was surprised at all the negative reviews. I've watched Star Trek since its inception and have seen so many different takes on story line and characters that I've lost track. I wonder what criteria the detractors are using to judge this program. We've had a program based on a space station, a lost ship, and a later version of the Enterprise. All I can say is lighten up and give it a chance. Story lines are unique and thought provoking, if a little convoluted, and the characters are well acted with some depth. special effects are excellent and, personally I enjoy the tie-in with the original show. Give it a chance, I think you will be glad you did

Thats not Star Trek. Thats Star Dreck!
  • Jun 15, 2019
Star Trek is about story, not lens flares and special effects

Great work, hopeful, entertaining. Perfect Sci-Fi

Horrible. I was a life long Trekkie until this. Who writes this garbage?
  • Jun 13, 2019
If you are not a Trekkie you might be able to enjoy it, but if you are I would recommend the Orville . As a sci-fi show on its own it is mediocre, not particularly outstanding but not too awful. However, as a star trek series it is very terrible. They add in things from the other series that really shouldn't be there and then try to change the cannon in ways that don't make sense. It completely ignores some of the things which made star trek so brilliant, such as exploring other cultures, ideas, ethics, philosophies in an entertaining way or the large ensemble cast . I think it would have worked much better if it had no relation to star trek.

Alas yet another science fiction classic needlessly sacrificed by social justice warriors on the altar of ultra-liberalism. This simply is not the Star Trek universe, earlier incarnations did lead the way on many racial and social inclusion subjects, usually brilliantly written and subtle. The first interracial kiss on TV from the original 1960's series, Black commander in DS9, female captain in Voyager and many more. Can you imagine the impact of a Japanese helmsman in the US not long after WW2 or a Russian cadet during the cold war? These subjects were dealt with in a mature and informed way. Discovery rams SJW's and PC propaganda down your throat, it takes precedent over the story lines which is a shame. I watched season one but that is it for me. RIP Star Trek

How hard could it be to make a good Star Trek series? The only thing they had to do was to just continue TNG. Instead they created this hateful political propaganda piece.

There were some things I really liked. I really liked the re-design of the Klingons and the extensive use of their language. It was a break for the normal Star Trek series and they wanted to emphasize that no, The Klingons don't speak English. Plus people do need to read more anyway. The character the really rubbed me the wrong way was Burnham. She's a perfect stereotype of the American black woman: lacks respect for authority, quick to snap, thinks she knows everything, and likes to push people around. She wouldn't last a day in any military organization. Yet she's celebrated for these attributes! Ask the producers how much they'd like to work with someone like that in real life. I realize this was meant as a pushback against the Trump era but in reality is only makes his position seem like the more moderate one. You want to see a good strong female character? Look no further than Major Kira. She wasn't afraid of anyone but at the same time after Sisko put her in her place on episode 1 she respected his authority and earned her promotion. I'd love to serve under Colonel Kira but would request an immediate transfer if I had to serve under Burnham. For the annoying characters alone this show deserves 1 star but it gets 3 because I actually liked the plot in season 1 and the CG was amazing.
