Critic Reviews for Star Trek: Discovery Season 1

All Critics (70) | Top Critics (18)

For now, the new Star Trek feels less like a reboot than an attempt to turn sci-fi's most cerebral property into a glum Star Wars clone.

As the medium of television evolves, it's comforting to know that Star Trek is there to evolve right along with it.

Sep 25, 2017 | Full Review…

While Discovery is fundamentally quite different from much of the Trek that's come before, its engagement with the franchise, and willingness to both celebrate and examine its core values, keep it true to that spirit.

The actor playing this mysterious Gabriel Lorca -- Jason Isaacs -- also happens to be a major talent who instantly lifts Martin-Green's game. These two appear to be a winning, multidimensional combo.

In short, [Discovery] announces a series of high ambition, fit for purpose for the golden age of TV.

Sep 29, 2017 | Full Review…

It's got enough good stuff to keep me watching. Nonetheless, it feels a bit too obsessed with Star Trek for its own sake, rather than as a vehicle for telling stories with broader resonance.

Sep 29, 2017 | Full Review…

It leads to reflection, has well-defined characters, exciting battles and some moment of genuine wonder with the infinity of space. Pure 'Star Trek'. [Full Review in Spanish]

Aug 9, 2019 | Full Review…

It has been a good start, in which we had the chance to know great characters and I felt myself on board the ship. [Full Review in Spanish]

This messy iteration is not what Trekkies deserve.

Feb 1, 2019 | Full Review…

The effects are suitably impressive, the characters and premise are compelling, and a clear effort has gone into producing something new and different that still upholds the spirit of hope and optimism the entire franchise embodies.

Jan 28, 2019 | Full Review…

It was a risk to set a new Star Trek show several years before the events of the Original Series, but, as it turns out, it was a risk worth taking.

Nov 16, 2018 | Full Review…

The beauty alone is enough to support a debut episode that's very heavy on stiff dialogue and acting.

Total ripp-off, steals from independent creator and doesn't even give any recognition for it. Painfull sjw garbage.

I love this show cant ever get enough
  • Oct 09, 2019
Poorly written, most of the characters are unlikable, and, worst of all, a complete departure from the tone and look of Star Trek that fans have loved for decades.
  • Oct 08, 2019
The continued destruction of a universe and classic characters. This time with plagiarism and orcs? Makes sense because now they are adding elves to Star Trek Picard. At least we will always have classic Trek. Measure of a Man, Drumhead, City of the Edge of Forever.
  • Oct 07, 2019
Taking TNG and turning into a popular political agenda blew it for me. Save your money/time, go watch something else. It is pure crap.
  • Oct 02, 2019
Oh, wow. WTF is this? Are they intentionally trying to ignore over 50 years of tradition and lore? Or do they just want to completely wreck it? Or have none of the writers ever watched a single episode of any Trek? I'm not even going to bother rating each episode. They all deserve one or less starts. Not a single episode lived up to any of the preceding Treks, except Enterprise, which itself was pretty awful and almost killed Trek for me and many Trekers. This, though, this drivel, this drek, this utter crap, is completely sickening. I'm done with it. I won't bother watching another episode of this trash. DONE. I can only hope ST:Picard will move above this utter tripe.

Just awful. I recently got into star trek after bingeing on the next generation and this doesn't even feel like it's part of the same universe. The effects are trash, the plot lines are atrocious and the actors are like charisma vaccums they just suck all joy from any scene they're in and don't get me started on Micheal, she is just fundamentally unlikeable as a character, she walks about the whole time like she has a giant chip on her shoulder and it destroyed any chance this show might have had to prove its critics wrong. The biggest complaint is star trek should be show about family where it focuses on different members of the crew, there's none of that here it's the Micheal Burnham show who always saves the day. Pure trash

Amazing show , got me back into the universe
  • Sep 30, 2019
Bit of a rocky start but a really fun watch. My main complaint is the Kligon redesign. The tech overhaul was much needed and fairly well done. DIS grows its beard by the halfway mark of the first season (unlike TNG, DS9, ENT or VGR which all took until season 2 or 3).

Leftists propaganda and female charakters bullshit storys to level of puke.
