This show has boldly tried re-inventing and updating Trek, and, after the first episode, it works.

While Discovery is fundamentally quite different from much of the Trek that's come before, its engagement with the franchise, and willingness to both celebrate and examine its core values, keep it true to that spirit.

The actor playing this mysterious Gabriel Lorca -- Jason Isaacs -- also happens to be a major talent who instantly lifts Martin-Green's game. These two appear to be a winning, multidimensional combo.

In short, [Discovery] announces a series of high ambition, fit for purpose for the golden age of TV.

It's got enough good stuff to keep me watching. Nonetheless, it feels a bit too obsessed with Star Trek for its own sake, rather than as a vehicle for telling stories with broader resonance.

As the medium of television evolves, it's comforting to know that Star Trek is there to evolve right along with it.

The beauty alone is enough to support a debut episode that's very heavy on stiff dialogue and acting.

It has been a good start, in which we had the chance to know great characters and I felt myself on board the ship. [Full Review in Spanish]

This messy iteration is not what Trekkies deserve.

The effects are suitably impressive, the characters and premise are compelling, and a clear effort has gone into producing something new and different that still upholds the spirit of hope and optimism the entire franchise embodies.

It was a risk to set a new Star Trek show several years before the events of the Original Series, but, as it turns out, it was a risk worth taking.

It leads to reflection, has well-defined characters, exciting battles and some moment of genuine wonder with the infinity of space. Pure 'Star Trek'. [Full Review in Spanish]

Not bad but could much better!

Bad Star trek. Just another sub-par action flick with bad writing and bad acting that has nothing to do with science fiction or anything Star Trek.

It's okay for random sci-fi television, but terrible for Star Trek. Where is the optimism or morality plays? The most frustrating part is the lack of an ensemble cast. Michael Berman is fantastic lead, but half of the cast is so undeveloped that it's hard to remember most of their names. I certainly don't have a problem with them updating the effects from the 90's, however the poor Klingons look so different, they seem like strange, unknown aliens. Let's hope Season 3 gets a little better now that they're not restricted to trying to fit into a well established part of cannon.

This isn´t Star Trek. It´s a horrible alternate universe version created by people who don´t understand what Star Trek is about

While being visually stunning, it's one of the worst written sci-fi shows and an insult to any intelligent star trek fan.

Yes ,Star Trek Discovery is good

An intriguing cast, thoughtful scripting with an eye for nuanced character development, and able production values make for a satisfying addition to the Trek franchise.

Star Trek is no longer special. -- What an unpleasant mess.

I watched the first two episodes and I had to stop. Do these writers understand star trek? I don't think they do. It is all gloss and no substance the writing is quite bad.

If it carried another name I would have like it more, as Star Trek it disappoints. I started watching ST in the 1970's and have loved each incarnation of the show. Each show and the later films built up a world along with principles, history and ideologies. ST Discovery pretty much discards most of that history and lore. However, as a standalone SciFi programme it's not that bad. The stories are credible and the actors do a pretty good job, there is some forced identity politics going on but if you can ignore that it's not a bad watch.
