Stephen King's Rose Red: Mini-Series (2002)

Mini-Series
Stephen King's Rose Red

Critics Consensus

Rose Red asks too many questions and provides too few answers to satisfy given its lack of scares -- though King completists may enjoy wandering its somewhat mysterious halls.

Critic Reviews for Stephen King's Rose Red Mini-Series

All Critics (17) | Top Critics (6)

The bad news is that in true King fashion the mini series is about three hours longer than it needs to be. Somebody throw King to a newspaper editor

Written by the prolific King, this overwrought, overacted three-parter on ABC is campy, not scary or even stomach-turning.

''Rose Red'' is a clever tale to the end. You'll never be tempted to take it seriously. But if you let it hook you, you won't be tempted to turn it off.

All of the elements that make a King story so accessible and entertaining are missing from this production.

A meaty DVD package for a somewhat less than unnerving ghost story. This one may be for King's most fanatical followers.

Tension is effective and flashes of pure horror work surprisingly well. [Full Review in Spanish]

King doesn't quite wrap everything up in the end. There are some unanswered questions that might have been answered. But he has created a creepy tale that anyone who enjoys being scared -- without being totally grossed out -- will enjoy.

Jan 15, 2020 | Full Review…

Rose Red lacks the cohesiveness to make characters accessible or believable. It's as if King did an outline for each of his characters, but never fully fleshed them out the way he would for a 500-page novel.

Jan 15, 2020 | Full Review…

The main problem with Rose Red is its unappealing characters... If you don't care about the oddballs whose lives are in jeopardy, it is pretty difficult to get involved in the story.

Jan 15, 2020 | Rating: 1.5/4 | Full Review…

King's characters inspire indifference-except for the ones who are actively annoying-so you're unlikely to care that some of the ghostbusters wind up dead.

Oct 11, 2018 | Full Review…

King raises plenty of intriguing questions, but as usual he fails to provide adequate answers.

This is one of my favorite works by Stephen King. It is an amazing story with a great cast.

one of my most favourite stephen king movies, from reading/watching "the diary of ellen rimbauer" following rose red has been such a great story. It's a film I can always return to and enjoy, watching the characters enter the house and the anticipation of each room of the house. lovely music themes and narration.

This scared me when I was a kid, but it was pretty good.
