Succession: Season 2 Reviews

There is enough back-stabbing and secretive planning among the Roys to keep them joyless - and to keep us joyfully entertained - for some time to come.

Strong gives a remarkable performance as an extremely fragile and isolated figure.

Succession is skilled at steadily and surely raising its characters up to multidimensional horrors: allowing Shiv to show her true colours, turning from the principled, independent one into an operator more ruthless than any of her brothers.

The first series was so top-notch, each character worth a drama to themselves, that I feared it couldn't summon the same momentum. Well, forget that: it relaunched with all cylinders firing and spitting. There was no quality drop.

What makes Succession feel particularly rich and rounded - and very sad - is the depravity, rarely played for laughs, of every moment in which this family touches normal people.

Season 2 is extraordinary. Jesse Armstrong, the show's creator, finds new levels of horror to mine in Succession's autopsy of the ultrarich, but he also finds pathos, which elevates the show even further.

The series is much more than a straight satire - although in the hands of creator Jesse Armstrong... it is an excellent one.

If, like me, you initially dismissed this show, it's time you circle back to the best parable about corporate America since The Wolf of Wall Street.

A diamond hard comedy drama where the laughs are funereal bleak and most of the characters wish each other dead, it is difficult to choose a favourite monster from the bunch.
August 15, 2019
Because it's so much more interested in the comedy of the cluelessness super-rich, it insulates the audience from the real world as well.
August 15, 2019
There's not enough absorbency in a tissue factory to mop up the verbal effluent when the warring siblings and their irascible patriarch get together to talk business.

The deliciously wicked HBO drama returns for its second season and it is more charged, more intoxicating and more must-see than the last.
August 14, 2019
It should be said that Succession isn't for the faint-hearted. Foul-mouthed insults flew thick and fast, while several scenes would have been pretty impenetrable to new viewers.

There are moments - usually when the camera jerks towards Kendall's vacant, flummoxed face - when I believe that Succession is just about the best thing I've ever seen on television.
August 12, 2019
Despite a plot that seems far too close to home, this show is fantastic and somehow not incredibly depressing...season two...is even better than the first season.
August 12, 2019
Succession somehow makes the high-stakes machinations of self-centered, awful, filthy rich people a whole lot of fun.
August 12, 2019
The second-season debut on HBO was riveting, somehow exceeding the sky-high expectations that have attached to this show.
August 12, 2019
It's good to have this dysfunctional dynasty back.
August 12, 2019
Even in moments that border on satire there is a sense this is how corridors of power operate. It is the small and large human follies, obsessions, abuses and furies in the Roys that make them riveting to watch.
August 10, 2019
The series demystifies the billionaire class while simultaneously painting a terrifying picture of their unstoppable momentum.
