Summer Heights High: Season 1 Reviews

June 5, 2018
All of Lilley's characters are exaggerations, of course, but their behavior is rooted in the very relatable absurdity of high school life

Such an accurate spoof of a reality-television documentary that viewers could initially have mistaken it for the real thing... It's possessed of a sensibility that seems oddly peculiar to the age: uproarious subtlety.

It is funny in the manner of Best in Show or A Mighty Wind, but much more biting. Although that means there are some truly painful moments, the talent of Mr. Lilley, a brilliant mimic, is a divine salve.

Cultural distinctions notwithstanding... Summer Heights High seldom rises above silliness and mostly proves just plain irritating.

Summer Heights High is not a perfect comedy, and those offended by crossed boundaries will feel their boundaries crossed. But it's a welcome, if sometimes familiar, HBO comedy while we wait for the return of Flight of the Conchords.

The documentary look is engaging, and Lilley's wildly over-the-top performance as three distinct characters is made all the more funny as it clashes against the reserved nature of the nonactors.

Lilley's obviously a talent, but for his next project, I'd like to see how he plays with others.

Where Larry David makes you uncomfortable in order to make you helpless with laughter, Mr. Lilley makes you uncomfortable so that you'll feel - uncomfortable.
June 4, 2018
In the end, while its outrageous characters are often amusing, their palate of jokes runs thin.
June 4, 2018
Although spookily well-realized, they are essentially sketch characters stretched about as far as they can go.
June 4, 2018
All the standard jokes of the genre are in place here... But they're all in place in good shape.
June 4, 2018
Has all the ingredients for a hilarious mockumentary without the benefit of actually being funny.
June 4, 2018
More than merely a comedy of embarrassment because it focused explicitly on issues of race and class.
June 4, 2018
A rich, nuanced and painfully accurate look at modern school life.

[Chris] Lilley, in makeup and wigs, makes these three originals funny and painful to watch in equal measure.
June 4, 2018
A perfectly entertaining, well-made and sharp-witted comedy made for fans of shows like The Office and films such as Waiting for Guffman.
