Fashion designer Ava Gregory has a pretty great life -- a good job, a sweet California beach house and a close-knit group of friends who have become like family to her. All of it gets tossed in the air, however, when her sister and brother-in-law die in a car accident and she takes in their three children: 16-year-old Bradin, brooding 12-year-old Nikki, and 8-year-old Derrick. As the kids try to adjust to a new life without their parents, Ava has to come to terms with the responsibility she now bears.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Summerland is an unoriginal and overly sentimental copy of The O.C.

Unfortunately, the premise feels so hackneyed - and the ending so rushed and tidy - it's hard to become invested in what transpires. Go to Full Review

I can't help marvelling at how good some of the WB family dramas are at hitting both teen-agers and adults in their soft spots. Go to Full Review

Perhaps not surprisingly ''Summerland'' feels forced -- a show that tries to blend the sun-and-sex insouciance of shows like ''Baywatch'' and ''The O.C.'' with the teenage-angst earnestness of ''Dawson's Creek'' and ''Everwood.'' Go to Full Review

[A] bland sand-and-surf family show. Go to Full Review
Roger Catlin Hartford Courant 10/07/2019
Mostly, the kids seem saddled with the kind of bad acting that stalls "7th Heaven." And by introducing the story in an excruciating two-hour premiere is almost certainly giving them too much rope. Go to Full Review
