It's exploitation of humorous (and sometimes sad) retail tropes - including this week's plot device of a sales contest that leads to a pizza party - continues to work wonders.

At least Superstore takes place in a world where characters are refreshingly frank about issues of class. Perhaps if it calms down a bit in its attempts to get laughs from shock value, it'll be a pleasant successor to The Office.

And yet! Superstore is delightful! Good, even, in its way! The show is, despite and very much because of its shortcomings, extremely successful as a piece of pop-cultural confectionery.

It's depressing to see actors this good wasted on material that strains for the heights of better workplace comedies (itself hardly a fresh genre), yet reaches only cliched supposed-to-be-funny levels.

The first four episodes are alternately warm and witty, but what's most exciting about Superstore is its potential for unabashed weirdness somewhere down the line.

Superstore has its funny moments as it alternately mocks People of Wal-Mart types while trying to protect the dignity of the store's employees. It's difficult for the show to have it both ways.

It's like the show can't get out of its own way to let us enjoy what little pleasure it has to offer, then suddenly realizes it's doing just that, and half-asses a make-good.

In the early going, though, it isn't quite as funny as something you'd see in a real big-box store in St. Louis any given weekend.

Despite a cast that includes Mark McKinney it stumbles on crudeplfot lines and dumb visual gags.
November 30, 2015
It can be at cross purposes tonally, sending mixed messages; it seems to condescend to its milieu and people even as it explicitly warns against condescension. I might call that "lifelike," but it also feels unfocused and unformed.

Spitzer doesn't fully explore the show's potential, but the important thing is that Superstore has potential.

Superstore does not seem as committed to the grim void that has replaced the American dream as early episodes of The Office were-but the debut sitcom is leaning in the right direction.
November 30, 2015
Like the type of operation it represents, Superstore has a little bit of everything, not all of it good, but there are gems to be had in a few departments.
November 30, 2015
Acted with a certain amount of charm and riddled with lame jokes, Superstore seems like the kind of sitcom NBC might have programmed in the mid-1990s, somewhere between Boston Common and The Single Guy.
November 30, 2015
If Superstore can continue to improve, the show itself can be the underdog as it strives to emulate Community in carving out a long run, despite NBC's comedy inertia.
November 30, 2015
If you're looking to add something a little bit off-kilter to your comedy roster then Superstore promises to be a consistent source of laughs for some time to come.
November 30, 2015
While much of this is familiar - and even echoes that "People of Walmart" Web meme - the show comes closer to approximating the desired mix of sweetness and silliness than most of the network's workplace series have since The Office."

Golden Globe winner America Ferrera is as charming as ever as the overly dedicated assistant manager who tries to rein in a crew that's supposedly too wacky, but none are really allowed to let their freak flags fly.
November 30, 2015
The store may prove more interesting than the people who work there. Big-box retailers are ripe for a TV send-up, and Spitzer and company have clearly had a lot of fun building the world of Cloud 9.

Not good enough in the first two episodes. With a cast this outstanding, here's hoping for improvement by January, and beyond.
