What to Know

Critics Consensus

Gugu Mbatha-Raw's captivating performance gives Surface some depth, but this overheated potboiler only gets murkier the more it tries to spice up a derivative amnesia mystery.

Amnesia is a time-weathered device for creating narrative tension, and “Surface” isn’t breaking any new ground, but it does provide a pretty, gleamy veneer to gaze upon while the mystery unfolds. Go to Full Review
Matthew Gilbert Boston Globe 08/09/2022
Surface is a lot of escapist fun -- for a while, anyway, until, like far too many TV miniseries these days, it devolves into repetition, silliness, and, worst of all when it comes to a mystery story, vagueness. Go to Full Review

... There’s no sense of depth or attachment here, all is obvious and shallow and ultimately contrived. Go to Full Review

Using amnesia as a central plot element is a woefully cliched narrative cheat, but Gugu Mbatha-Raw's powerful performance will make viewers forget long enough to get sucked into this mystery. Go to Full Review

Surface offers minimal tension and virtually nothing to make coming back for a second season enticing in the least. Beyond attractive actors looking good, there is not much else here worth remembering. Go to Full Review

Surface strands Gugu Mbatha-Raw in a deep sea of soapy mediocrity. Go to Full Review

John C @RT07680136 Feb 25 It starts out rather slow (read boring) and then begins to pick up in episode 4 as, oddly enough, the acting improves ever so slightly. Sophie’s character development is key. She is so weirdly vague in episodes 1 through 3, it just looks like she struggles with conveying the frustration with "not remembering". James, her husband, is so strikingly handsome, I didn’t really care whether I liked Surface or not. See more Ang R @RT75488605 Aug 12 Definitely need a season 3! See more Lena R @RT53556206 Aug 10 Top 10 for sure!! it’ll make you predict what will happen, but you’ll almost always get it wrong & that’s what makes it a great show. its not a cliche! See more Aidan W @RT81868853 Jul 11 One of those series that you keep watching because you can't quite believe it's as bad as it seems. I think it's an Apple TV thing - we've become used to Apple TV delivering real quality (Severance ...). Guga Mbatha-Raw's 'captivating performance' - ? Erm, no. Nowhere near. Yes she is 'sublime' as one reviewer has said, skating perilously near old-fashioned manosphere sexual politics, but ... she can't pace herself, her pauses are too long, it's awkward. Same with the other principals, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Stephan James. Ari Graynor as Caroline marginally better. PLot? Well, hello ... memory loss and we spend the whole series waiting to find out how the hero/ine finds out who she is? Not what you'd call original. Howlers? The therapist, MarianneJean Baptiste. Someone should have done a bit of research on how therapy works. Terrible, appalling, a travesty. Back to plot - slow, slow, slow. I'm halfway through e6 and I really don't know who stole how much and why and who they thought they were when they were doing it. And you know what? I don't care. And there's the rub. It just doesn't engage. As I said I'm half way though e6 of 8 and I can't be bothered to watch the rest. And I'm cross with Apple TV for letting such mush on its screens. And that ain't no recommendation, viewers, is it? See more Chris M. @mymanmiller Jul 7 It keeps you trying to figure it out. It is a bit slow & repetitive, but not a flop. It is worth watching. See more Isabelle B @RT59067059 04/20/2025 Excruciatingly slow. The writers seem to have built this with large-sized Legos in three colors. How many times do I need to see the same scenes over and over? Once was plenty, especially since it was in slo-mo the first time. See more Read all reviews
