A former member of the military and an oncologist, Dr. Jack Dunlevy is a no-nonsense kind of guy who doesn't feel compelled to sugar-coat the truth. After years of working long hours while his wife, Joanne, raised their kids, he becomes a full-time parent when Joanne goes back to law school. He tries to guide his son, Frankie, who is awkwardly navigating freshman year of high school, and he faces challenges from his 17-year-old daughter, Rachel, who becomes a handful once she is no longer under the watchful eye of her mother.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Christopher Meloni's comedic chops help sell Surviving Jack's fresh twist on gender roles and the traditional sitcom formula, even if the show falls a little flat in other areas.

However, no one, including the older teenage sister (Claudia Lee), can survive "Surviving Jack's" hollow and formulaic dialogue, which is bursting with jokes that are half-funny at best. Go to Full Review
Tim Goodman The Hollywood Reporter 03/31/2014
Halpern has always been funny, and in Surviving Jack he's able to make his jokes about father and son more resonant and hilarious than anything he did on his previous, far too broad CBS series. Go to Full Review

As good as it is... Meloni's performance could not carry an entire series, and it fortunately doesn't have to. Go to Full Review

The premiere was a solid introduction to TV's newest throwback family, and in my opinion, there's plenty to come back for. Go to Full Review

Mike B @RT05296749 Oct 13 Loved this show. Dumbest show cancellation of all time. See more 05/11/2020 I absolutely LOVED this show! Every single person I spoke to about this show loved it. I have no idea why they chose to take it off the air, but I feel like they didn't give the show a chance. Chris Meloni and Rachael Harris were absolutely perfect together and their interactions with the kids was phenomenal. I was so sad when this went off the air. See more Shawn T @RT29010595 01/06/2018 It was an amazing show with a great cast and good humor that was canceled before it’s time. See more 03/02/2016 Loved this show!!! Was very disappointed when it was cancelled. See more 04/07/2015 This show is an instant classic. It seems like real life being documented. And it has heart to! Christopher Meloni is hilarious! Who knew he could be funny?! Even though it's only 8 episodes (and only 7 aired in the US. and they even marketed the seventh as the season finale!) it is still great, and I have re-watched it several times! See more 12/08/2014 Laugh out loud type of comedy, wish it was still on and hope to get on DVD See more Read all reviews
