Critic Consensus: Christopher Meloni's comedic chops help sell Surviving Jack's fresh twist on gender roles and the traditional sitcom formula, even if the show falls a little flat in other areas.

Originality wouldn't matter much if the jokes were good. But they're not. Instead, Jack is another in a long line of placeholder sitcoms, where context is used as a crude stand-in for comedy.
Like a single parent, the main character on Surviving Jack is being asked to carry too much of the load. Either he or the audience will get tired soon.
It's a wonderful opportunity for Meloni, playing TV's most unregenerate curmudgeon since Dabney Coleman gave us Buffalo Bill. And he makes a smorgasbord of it.
Even though Surviving Jack could use a few tweaks, Christopher Meloni wears the part of Jack Dunlevy on the new Fox sitcom like a suit perfectly tailored to his imposing frame.
Trouble is, the jokes too often come off as cartoon setups and Jack himself too often comes off as a bully.
