Surviving Jack: Season 1 (2014)

Critic Consensus: Christopher Meloni's comedic chops help sell Surviving Jack's fresh twist on gender roles and the traditional sitcom formula, even if the show falls a little flat in other areas.

Tv Season Info

This sitcom set in the 1990s follows Jack Dunlevy (Christopher Meloni), an ex-military man and no-nonsense doctor, who takes charge of running the household while his wife, Joanne (Rachael Harris), pursues her law degree. Jack takes a strict approach to parenting that doesn't always go over well with his two teenage kids—Frankie (Connor Buckley), an unsure of himself high-school freshman, and Rachel (Claudia Lee), a smart, independent and beautiful 17-year-old junior. But Jack's bark proves far worse than his bite, and while he might sound harsh he only wants what's best for his children as he helps them navigate their way through situations that include Frankie asking his crush to the homecoming dance and getting his first taste of alcohol, and Rachel joining the wrestling team and wanting to go on birth control.

Critic Reviews for Surviving Jack Season 1

Originality wouldn't matter much if the jokes were good. But they're not. Instead, Jack is another in a long line of placeholder sitcoms, where context is used as a crude stand-in for comedy.

Like a single parent, the main character on Surviving Jack is being asked to carry too much of the load. Either he or the audience will get tired soon.

It's a wonderful opportunity for Meloni, playing TV's most unregenerate curmudgeon since Dabney Coleman gave us Buffalo Bill. And he makes a smorgasbord of it.

Even though Surviving Jack could use a few tweaks, Christopher Meloni wears the part of Jack Dunlevy on the new Fox sitcom like a suit perfectly tailored to his imposing frame.

Trouble is, the jokes too often come off as cartoon setups and Jack himself too often comes off as a bully.

Surviving Jack at its best is amusing and at worst is still worth your time.

Both heartwarming and funny, Surviving Jack is an enjoyable comedy that celebrates the past without getting lost in it.

Surviving Jack is at its strongest when Jack's on screen.

Bill Lawrence of Scrubs and Cougar Town is behind it all, so there's a lot of talk of boobs and nearly no laughs.

When it works, it's mostly because it's so much fun watching Meloni.
