Swingtown doesn't promise anything as era-probing as Mad Men.

["Swingtown" is] CBS' laughable attempt to dive into the 1970s fad of spouse-swapping, which manages to be about as sexy and provocative as a bunion.

"Swingtown" is hardly worth getting feverish over.
September 13, 2019
Swingtown's opening hour falls well short of exciting any senses.

[A] gripping morality play about the wholly believable struggle of a family grappling with a new dawn in America.

"Swingtown" isn't just misguided because it's on the wrong network. The show's bigger problem is that the resident "squares" are much more interesting characters than the swingers at the core.

At best, Swingtown seems to aspire to be something of a cross between Ang Lee's... The Ice Storm and Richard Linklater's... dramedy Dazed and Confused, but it's a little too low-rent and cheesy to pull that off.

Basically, the whole thing is stylish and '70s-sexy but also shallow enough to feel like a less funny, hollowed-out combination of "The Wonder Years" and "Boogie Nights."

Given time to get over itself, "Swingtown" might even grow into something worthy of adult attention. For now, though, I'd stick with "Wife Swap" on ABC.

"Swingtown" suffers from the broadcast network mandate of having to be as accessible to as many people as possible, and so it has to mark all its period references and thematic observations with a yellow highlighter.

Sounds highfalutin' but it plays more like a soap. Judging by the pilot, there's not nearly as much savvy commentary here about feminism or sexual awakening as there is in AMC's "Mad Men."
September 13, 2019
Swingtown, at least in its opening hour, is a smoothly executed, coolly nonjudgmental soap opera about middle-class married life in an era of sexual experimentation.

As a summer series, Swingtown was fine, passing the time until the fall series return. But except for a few rare occasions, it rarely elevated beyond that.

While this is definitely one to file under "guilty pleasures", there is some substance to Swingtown beyond its endless period detail.

[T]his series... has one thing going for it -- the essential thing. That is, deft writing that yields the kind of suspense that causes people to want to know what comes next.
September 13, 2019
Even skillful performances by its largely unknown cast aren't able to hide the lack of character development and the sense that the people in this series are almost self-parodies. Their dialogue is shallow, and their lives even shallower.
September 13, 2019
[Mike] Kelley's fascinating concept - the personal and sexual politics of an open marriage - is stifled by CBS prime-time superficiality and an inability to intimately explore intimate subject matter.
September 13, 2019
The topic may have been more suited to cable, but creator Mike Kelley drew on provocative themes... without showing salacious amounts of skin.

[S]everal characters exhibit promise, in a soap made all the more intriguing by the fact it feels just a little bit dirty.
September 12, 2019
With so much going on, one would expect Swingtown to be exciting, but it's not.
