This series follows the exploits of Jack Black and Kyle Gass, the two halves of Tenacious D., the self-proclaimed "greatest band on earth." Their music is heavy on power chords and lyrics about sex, Satan, and why they are the greatest band on Earth.

Black and Gass, as writers, capture well the essence of nightclub life and the ambitiousness of the talent-challenged, an area they know well from gigging around town as one of the city's fine parody acts. Go to Full Review

The D comes to praise rock, not to bury it, and beneath their over-the-top shtick, Black and Gass obviously love the silly rock tropes they satirize. Go to Full Review

If the joke is that these guys are deluded hacks, what makes the joke work is that Black and Gass commit to their material with the demented vigor of true artistes. Go to Full Review

If you run across someone who's never heard of The D, this is what you should show them -- unless they're disturbed by the vulgar language... it's virtually guaranteed to make them fans of Kage and Jables. Go to Full Review

Jacob B @RT89309114 Jun 26 Shame this lasted only three episodes with six 11-minute segments because this HBO, for lack of a better word, miniseries is fun. But hey, that's what happens when Tenacious D make it clear they're doing this for the art and didn't want to relinquish creative control for the sake of more episodes. Admittedly, watching Tenacious D's short-lived run on TV after seeing The Pick of Destiny and the Tribute music video make the HBO show feel rather primitive and more like a proof-of-concept in comparison but the music's still fun to listen to, the duo are clearly enthusiastic about what they're doing and it's still quite funny. Maybe not on the same level as Pick of Destiny but still a fun watch nonetheless...since I always felt both films were meant to appeal to similar demographics, I wonder if people who saw The Blues Brothers film first felt a similar way if they saw the SNL skits afterwards.
