Critic Reviews for The Bastard Executioner Season 1
All Critics (56) | Top Critics (33) | Fresh (26) | Rotten (30)
Thematically, Sutter is back in his wheelhouse, and that's what was likely most appealing to FX, and will be to those who miss Jax Teller and the gang.
The Bastard Executioner ultimately feels like an unconvincing bit of expensive dress-up.
With visibly second-tier production values, The Bastard Executioner feels a bit more like people playing dress up than the best works in its genre should.
I can't see Sagal's story line improving much in the coming weeks, unless she gets a bob, but, with all the good material mixed into this bold series, I'm more than willing to be surprised.
Like its nefarious Englishmen, The Bastard Executioner holds a sharp blade to our necks to demand respect. So far, though, it does little else to earn it.
It may require some patience to understand where it's going and start heading toward the payoff.
The Bastard Executioner is loud, brash, and thoroughly empty, telling a story that, despite its setting, feels too familiar to any number of recent, better dramas.
The Bastard Executioner still feels like an inescapable slog in its early going.
Everything surrounding the colorfully bloody bastard-execution-ing is grungy soap opera.
In the cut-throat realm of cable TV, Bastard Executioner would do well to see the sword pointing at its own jugular.
Granted, the fact that he then becomes responsible for executing people he sympathizes with is interesting, but the show's writers mine Brattle's emotional turmoil for only a fraction of its potential depth and intrigue.
The two-hour pilot takes a long time setting up the show's true intention... But when it does get there, it's a worthy journey of self-preservation and exploration of the human soul.

Jun 01, 2020It'brutal, there are a lot, but a lot of hystorical failure with the cloth, the jewels, the cutlerys, ustensils. And I don't really understand what the show is about...What kind of story the showrunner wants the audience to understand and to show. Sade, because it could have been very interesting to learn more about this periode of time which was dark and very brutal. In the darkest time you can finf some light and even glamour. See the "Witcher"....

Apr 19, 2020Historical, amazing cast, just awesome & right up my alley. If you like the Vikings, The Last Kingdom, check this out! Written by Son's of Anarchy's Kurt Sutter, stars Katy Segal!

Dec 14, 2019I loved Sons, I am a Kurt Sutter fan but this was just a waste of time and space. The show had a lot of potential and the actors were great working with what they were given. Too much Kurt and the unnecessary role he made for his wife. Utterly ridiculous! What a disappointment!

Sep 25, 2018It's a little hard to understand some of the characters because of the accent but I LOVE this show! I think the brutality and gore is something of that time period and should be kept. It's no more brutal than things that happen in today's world. The only thing I don't like is Katey Sagal's part. She's just not good at it.

Sep 26, 2017What a shame this show was cancelled as the cast was excellent apart from the wooden Edwin. The pilot although not great did show promise and the remaining episodes were worth watching only being spoilt by the B&W fade outs. Lee Jones was a triumphant as the lead and should go on and do more.A real shame that poor ratings ruined another potentially good show
