The Bastard Executioner: Season 1 (2015)

Season 1
The Bastard Executioner

Critics Consensus

Kurt Sutter's The Bastard Executioner doesn't want for dark thrills, but it unfortunately has more enthusiasm for brutality and gore than necessary narrative focus.

Critic Reviews for The Bastard Executioner Season 1

All Critics (55) | Top Critics (29)

Thematically, Sutter is back in his wheelhouse, and that's what was likely most appealing to FX, and will be to those who miss Jax Teller and the gang.

Sep 15, 2015 | Full Review…

With visibly second-tier production values, The Bastard Executioner feels a bit more like people playing dress up than the best works in its genre should.

Sep 15, 2015 | Full Review…

I can't see Sagal's story line improving much in the coming weeks, unless she gets a bob, but, with all the good material mixed into this bold series, I'm more than willing to be surprised.

Sep 14, 2015 | Full Review…

Like its nefarious Englishmen, The Bastard Executioner holds a sharp blade to our necks to demand respect. So far, though, it does little else to earn it.

Sep 14, 2015 | Full Review…

It may require some patience to understand where it's going and start heading toward the payoff.

Sep 14, 2015 | Rating: 3/5 | Full Review…

The Bastard Executioner ultimately feels like an unconvincing bit of expensive dress-up.

Sep 15, 2015 | Full Review…

The two-hour pilot takes a long time setting up the show's true intention... But when it does get there, it's a worthy journey of self-preservation and exploration of the human soul.

Sep 14, 2015 | Rating: 7/10 | Full Review…

A crude, gory spectacle does not a great series make, and The Bastard Executioner displays all the surface marks of an ambitious period piece or genre epic without any of the core traits.

Aug 10, 2017 | Full Review…

Everything surrounding the colorfully bloody bastard-execution-ing is grungy soap opera.

Sep 15, 2015 | Full Review…

In the cut-throat realm of cable TV, Bastard Executioner would do well to see the sword pointing at its own jugular.

Sep 15, 2015 | Full Review…

Granted, the fact that he then becomes responsible for executing people he sympathizes with is interesting, but the show's writers mine Brattle's emotional turmoil for only a fraction of its potential depth and intrigue.

Sep 14, 2015 | Rating: 5/10 | Full Review…

The Bastard Executioner still feels like an inescapable slog in its early going.

Audience Reviews for The Bastard Executioner: Season 1

I loved Sons, I am a Kurt Sutter fan but this was just a waste of time and space. The show had a lot of potential and the actors were great working with what they were given. Too much Kurt and the unnecessary role he made for his wife. Utterly ridiculous! What a disappointment!

It's a little hard to understand some of the characters because of the accent but I LOVE this show! I think the brutality and gore is something of that time period and should be kept. It's no more brutal than things that happen in today's world. The only thing I don't like is Katey Sagal's part. She's just not good at it.

What a shame this show was cancelled as the cast was excellent apart from the wooden Edwin. The pilot although not great did show promise and the remaining episodes were worth watching only being spoilt by the B&W fade outs. Lee Jones was a triumphant as the lead and should go on and do more.A real shame that poor ratings ruined another potentially good show

Loved it! I couldn't stop watching. I am bummed that there will be no 2nd season.
  • Aug 02, 2016
Very underrated medieval epic, full of bloody battles and torture scenes.
  • Jul 22, 2016
    Another great one falls

This is one of the series that I like but unfortunately it was stopped and the story ends just like that..
  • Dec 13, 2015
    Slow start ... ...great twists
  • Nov 30, 2015
This series possesses it all: historical realism, mystical belief in magical possibility, spiritual honesty, romance, power, politics, great acting... I came on here hoping to discover the next release date. This story lures you in and hooks you, leaving you dangling impatiently in wait for the next episode.

An addictively delicious historical series set in 14th century Wales by Kurt Sutter with an exceptional cast. Interesting exploration of Christianity with Annora, the Dark Mute and The Gospel of the Nazarenes. Put on your closed captioned to catch all of the dialogue. It's so worth it.
