It's just that - and I feel bad about saying this - there's no place left for the show to go, now it's in its fourth series. The characters are all played out.
These four episodes provided some genuine, emotional closure to the story of Cathy and her family, dealt interestingly and movingly with lots of questions about death, and what comes next and ended the series in the only way it honestly could.
The Big C doesn't traffic in miracles, but it does deliver small pleasures worth pondering and savoring.
The path The Big C takes is fairly predictable and unsurprising, but that doesn't mean these last four hours aren't occasionally heartfelt.
