The Comeback: Season 1 (2005)

SEASON:

Season 1
The Comeback

Critics Consensus

Intriguingly cynical, The Comeback unfortunately lacks the sharp insight and sympathetic characters needed to skewer showbiz conventions.

Critic Reviews for The Comeback Season 1

All Critics (15) | Top Critics (8)

There's a feeling that the makers of The Comeback have been too busy making comedy TV to watch much reality TV, so they aren't that attuned to the genre.

In the end, The Comeback is as trying as the genre it attempts to skewer.

[For HBO,] here's a tip prompted by the lameness of The Comeback and the failure of "Unscripted": Get out of the house. Leave the neighborhood. Stop navel- gazing.

It's Kudrow who provides the show with its comic backbone, and the actress also gives the show heart.

Apr 29, 2014 | Rating: 3/4 | Full Review…

What kind of reality is this supposed to be-some shunning ceremony among Amazon Indians in the fevered imagination of Claude Lévi-Strauss?

Apr 29, 2014 | Full Review…

The Comeback is a worthy new configuration - the side-splittingly sad sitcom.

Apr 29, 2014 | Full Review…

The Comeback is funny, not in a side-splitting, "ha-ha" kind of way but more of a slow-burning, "yep" kind of way that makes you wince because it's so painfully true.

Nov 14, 2014 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

The problem is . . . Kudrow's Valerie is so unsympathetic, unengaging, uninteresting and annoying it's impossible to root for her. It's hard not to root against her.

Apr 29, 2014 | Full Review…

The set, crew and cast members of 'Room and Bored' feel like a spoof of a hundred mindless sitcoms, and the backstage double-dealings provide some of The Comeback's best moments.

Apr 29, 2014 | Full Review…

I saw this show and came away impressed by its mordant humor and bitter truth.

Apr 29, 2014 | Rating: 3.5/4 | Full Review…

The Comeback was way ahead of its time. Who could have predicted back in 2005 how utterly inane reality TV would become?

Jun 1, 2018 | Full Review…

The characters in The Comeback aren't worth getting to know. Kudrow may not want to be Phoebe anymore, but she should at least try to be someone we want to get to know.

Audience Reviews for The Comeback: Season 1

It's my favorite show ever. So smart so funny. I can watch it over and over again and I always see something new.

Im watching season 1 now. It is sooo depressing. It might be Disney kind of funny where adults are portrayed as assholes. Lisa Kudrow is beautiful and still pretty young. This is a show about how irrelevant older people are and how quickly they are replaced. Ignored. .

Show starts as a bad (or at least seen before) critique of sitcoms and Hollywood life, but progresses to be heartbreaking and heartwarming. This is not Pheobe Buffay, this is Michael Scott on coke.

Lisa Kudrow walks a fine line throughout Season 1. Valerie tries her best to be the fake, image-obsessed, over-the-hill actress who'll suffer any humiliation to make it back into the spotlight. And it certainly seems like she get there by the end of the series. Yet, I never got the impression that's who Valerie really was as a person. You like her. You want her to succeed not as the fool but as an actress who's got something real to show despite to surrealities of reality TV. I can't wait to see what she does with Season 2. It's so cool that HBO brought this one back.
