Tv Season Info

In the first season of this legal drama, Christine Rosa (Marin Ireland), an impassioned caseworker with the Innocence Initiative, tries to exonerate Terry Kucik (Joe Anderson), a man she believes was wrongly convicted of brutally killing an African American family in their Philadelphia home. As she embarks on a tricky and complicated search to find the real killer, her quest for justice puts her at odds with the city's corrupt and powerful. She faces opposition from prominent district attorney Adam Page (Damon Gupton), who built his career and reputation on this case, and fears that someone is trying to take all that away from him. As he struggles between doing what is right and doing what is best for his family's future, he worries about the influence a crooked bigwig has on his wife Billie (Nia Long), a corporate lawyer, and his father Isaiah (Clarke Peters), who is the police commissioner. Meanwhile, it is revealed early on that Christine has a deeply personal motive for seeing Terry's conviction overturned: Her own dad is on death row for a murder she's convinced he didn't commit.

All Critics (13) | Top Critics (8)

The Divide is a show about a highly racial crime, but it does not utilize race pruriently or simplistically.

There's a corner-cutting quality to the series -- beginning with the casting -- that makes this feel like a decidedly off-Broadway effort.

The Divide... is surprisingly good. But what's most surprising is that it's on WE, a cable channel best known for shows like L.A. Hair and Marriage Boot Camp.

The Divide does deal with issues that transcend gender and promises to be a very good show.

Jul 16, 2014 | Full Review…

There's a certain amount of melodrama in the premiere (which is all that was previewed for critics), but the beginning fits a fair amount of nuance into a package that could have been a soapbox.

Under Goldwyn's direction, the series has a cold, wintry palette, and a darkness to it that is atmospheric without being overwhelming, and serves to reflect the show's illustration of moral grayness.

. The issues on The Divide are well worth pursuing.

[It] succeeds by one of the few network dramas to even address contemporary racial tensions. The two hour premiere will satisfy you, and make you glad it's coming back for more.

Jul 16, 2014 | Full Review…

It makes the common mistake of cable dramas from networks just starting out: confusing a compelling job with a compelling character

Death penalty drama is mature and violent.

The Divide pilot suffers from a few TV flourishes... but The Divide deserves the attention of fans of legal thrillers as it marks a step in WEtv's evolution away from the likes of Bridezillas.
