Critic Reviews for The Enfield Haunting Season 1

The scares, when they came, were effective.

The subtlety is in the interaction between the characters. That may not be enough for viewers expecting either an intellectual puzzle or a thrill ride, but it could scare up some viewers.

This straight faced and non-dramatized approach to the horror genre is what makes The Enfield Haunting's antiquated storytelling feel so refreshing.

It's a pretty safe introduction to the genre for young people, but as far as older viewers are concerned, that's precisely the problem.

Word has it that Timothy Spall was so freaked out by the storyline that he nearly bailed on the part. Thankfully he didn't and he is at his best here.

Let's hope they manage to maintain this level of spooky tension throughout the remaining two episodes, as this could be the best British ghost story we've seen on TV in years.

The scares - creepy man appearing in the mirror, trinkets piled in the middle of the sitting room - work nicely and the balance between what could be real and what is imagined in the characters' heads is handled well.

By my third hour with the ghostly gang in Enfield, I was crying out for a bleeding ceiling or a child's birthday party ruined by guts and gore.

The thrill of it all is in the reactions of the spooked, rather than the clever jiggery-pokery that allows furniture to become mobile or a marble to stop dead at someone's feet.

What marginally elevates the material, albeit in a non-levitating way, are the meticulous attention to detail and realistic performances, including Worthington-Cox as the beset child.

Audience Reviews for The Enfield Haunting: Season 1

Story was quite different from The Conjuring 2. The acting was good. The setting could have felt more authentic. This story was trying to be more heartwarming. The plot got a bit ridiculous at times. This was drama horror, not thrilling horror.

This is a very good three part drama. Very tense and very scary. Also, extremely well acted, especially by Timothy Spall and Eleanor Worthington-Cox. The drama and suspense never felt over-done or never seemed to clash together. Fantastic cinematography and direction. Stayed true to the source material. Only problem is that it did drag in some spots and was quite slow-building.

Intelligent, compelling, and very, very, creepy. Strong performances all around, and a surprising amount of legit scares even if the set-ups are familiar.

I thought this show was pretty good. It's well cast with a mostly unknown to North America British cast and it plays out like an old fashioned horror flick and doesn’t rely on gross-out gore to stir up fear in the audience. Although it's supposedly based on a true story, I've read on line that there are some doubts about that. It's sort of a British retelling of "The Amityville Horror". I found it appropriately creepy with some genuine scary moments. Not a bad show.
