Once (and if) The Grinder finds a direction, it has the potential to be a great show.

Fox's The Grinder is funny. This is truly a simplistic place to begin a review, but it's not exactly the most complicated sitcom out there - and anyway, "funny" isn't a word I'd use to describe most recent comedy pilots.

Dean Sanderson, is the living embodiment of the "I'm not a lawyer, but I play one on TV" joke. And while that's terrible news for his licensed attorney brother Stewart, it's one of myriad amusements to be found in Fox's new comedy The Grinder.

If The Grinder maintains its quality writing and Savage and Lowe keep having this much fun in their roles, FOX's new series could become appointment comedy TV viewing.

Lowe's name recognition may attract viewers who otherwise wouldn't tune in for a new comedy.

The Grinder makes up for its shortcomings with sheer exuberance.

The chemistry between the two brothers is... fun to watch, and as these stories tend to go, each will probably make the other better throughout the coming episodes.

It's not fantastic, but it's likable. And likable goes a long way on TV.

As much as The Grinder is mocking shows like, well, The Grinder, there is still this underlying love for the genre, and that love is the source of some of the best parodies.

Two funny leads and the promise of some good jokes is enough reason for encouragement this early in a show's run.

The Grinder's first outing was sweet, funny, and well acted. I'm excited to see where it goes and watch these characters develop. There's potential for this to be one of the better new shows of the fall.

The show is very smart.

Dean's goofy legal maneuverings... may strain the premise eventually, but after last season's wretched record for comedies, a sitcom that consistently amuses is worthy of acquittal.

Sure, the concept is ludicrous... But unlike other high concepts that didn't work for me danged if this didn't make me laugh - a lot.

Lowe and his continued dissection of middle-aged Adonis narcissism may be the main draws for the series, but Savage and Ellis help matters immeasurably by serving up a tasty variation on sitcom marriage.

It's not just good, it's pretty damn great.
September 29, 2015
Lowe is very strong in the title role, making full use of the comedy chops and timing that made him a welcome addition to the Parks and Recreation cast, and Savage is a great fit as the stay-at-home brother.

Most good comedy is based in truth. And there's more truth in Fox's The Grinder than you might assume.

If the writers and actors keep working hard... the characters and their warm interpersonal relationships will likely win us over before watching becomes a trial.

It has emotional truth, let's call it, and it plays well.
