The series is excellent, absorbing and addictive. When each episode ends, you long for the next - a hallmark of great dramas.

Now that the Killing has been true to its word about solving its mystery in a single season, if it does come back again, I hope that it keeps in mind that its appeal lies far more in its characters than in its twists.

At this early stage, it's hard to know whether The Killing will live up to AMC's aspirations and become The Next Great American Television Show, but, with a mystery this engrossing, who really cares?

The Killing is the least prepossessing, an eerily quiet, yet compelling and complex, tale of the way the murder of a teenager affects the lives of many people.

The Killing stands out - it is scary and suspenseful, but in a subdued, meditative way that is somehow all the more chilling.

The Killing is your basic Law & Order murder mystery - the step-by-step investigation, the list of perps that expands with each new piece of evidence, the "aha!'' and "really?'' twists.

The Killing is intentionally slow, and doesn't provide any of the usual staples of the genre as high-octane relief. No gun battles, no car chases - just cops doing their duty, politicians looking for ways to spin things.

From the start of the pilot episode, we can see that The Killing is no ordinary crime drama.

The Killing, is an engrossing, well-made drama series that viewers should embrace despite its tough subject matter.

It is compelling for its difference from the norm; it's not that whodunit is beside the point, but unlike a lot of cop shows, the trip will be just as important as the destination.

What distinguishes this drama from countless mysteries about missing young women gone to terrifying deaths is the unrelenting focus, complex and haunting, on the family left behind. A riveting tale with a hunt for the killer that's no less compelling.

The series is excellent, absorbing and addictive. When each episode ends, you long for the next -- a hallmark of great dramas.

Teenage Rosie Larsen is horrifically murdered, but it doesn't feel sensationalistic. It just feels very real.

Some viewers may find The Killing a little too cold and deliberate, but give it time. Its intensity builds steadily, giving the series unexpected power.

The Killing is emotionally spare and atmospherically dank.
April 3, 2011
The prologue practically functions as a schematic diagram of all the police procedurals - with their virtuous investigators and their quasi-necrophiliac tone - that The Killing seems to deconstruct and reassemble on a higher plain.

How slow can you go? That's up to your threshold as a viewer.

A show that is visually poetic, normatively compelling and, most important, sustainable for a good long haul.
