I'm already in the thrall of this somewhat peculiar series.

Uhtred's trials intensify when he joins Alfred's quest to unite the kingdoms into England, creating an epic backdrop for a handsome, stellar cast and expert storytellers to weave television's latest addictive historical fiction.

[The Last Kingdom] all meshes together in enthralling fashion with a tale that's understandable and a setting that's tailor made for picturesque vistas... livens up Saturday nights with Emmy caliber storytelling and oft-sumptuous production values.

Isn't in the same league as that other medievalesque literary adaptation Game of Thrones, nor does it have the epic scope of Vikings. But its breathtaking photography, glorious fight scenes, and fantastical story make it a worthwhile treat for genre fans.

There is plenty of spectacle in The Last Kingdom, but none quite as spellbinding as Alfred's quiet intelligence.

There are admittedly few better ways to open an engagingly grimy and gory adventure show about the 9th century Viking invasion of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms than with the title card: "Special Guest Star Rutger Hauer."

People who like large swords but little plot will enjoy this hairy fare.

The series has been described in advance as the BBC's answer to Game of Thrones. Yet, apart perhaps from the level of the violence, the programme's real roots seem to belong to less sophisticated (and less expensive) shows.

Overall though, thumbs up to a promising, bloody start.

The Last Kingdom looks like a cross between History's Vikings and HBO's Game of Thrones, but over the course of its first two seasons, it establishes itself as a show that can stand on its own two feet without the comparisons.

A mix of historical and fictional characters, The Last Kingdom presents the birth of Britain as an uneasy alliance between the Christian Alfred, the sickly but learned and wise youngest son of King Aethelwulf, and the pagan peoples ...

The Saxon Stories, Bernard Cornwell's novel series on which the show is based, are undoubtedly compelling reads. But as a television adaptation, The Last Kingdom is too little, too late, and comes across as too unoriginal.

this show solidified my hatred for christianity

Good show. First few episodes didn't immediately capture me, but I stuck to it and by the end of the season I was hooked.

Amazing show I hope this continues for a long time it's my favourite show

    Captivating! Great story line.

I couldn't love this show more: it's got great acting, characters I love to spend time with, action and adventure, political intrigue, and romance. Utred is a hero in the classical sense of the word: he's smart, brave, and honorable, a man torn between his Saxon heritage and his Viking upbringing.

What I really like about this whole series is the fact that it does not get overly caught up in soft porn. My wife and I can watch it in the main room without too much concern of any embarrassment. If this was an HBO production then we'd be watching it in the back room.

at times a very annoying, irritating show. Uhtred, having never been trained to fight with a sword, never been in battle. yet he seems to have a opinion of his skills. then he fights and kills Ubba who is a war hardened warrior. Uhtred disobeys both the Danes and the Saxons then is perplexed as to why both would rather see him dead. a shame, because it could be better.

Fantastic series. A must see! Hope there's a season 5!!!

sucks one in like the best of the best soaps, serials, & miniseries. vikings was first though. that show is way past tired, but, it was first. i watched every episode of both. this one may be better, only because it holds up better than vikings the farther in it gets.

Best series I've seen for decades. I hope Netflix picks up the next two series
